"QUICKSAND is an incisive courtroom thriller and a drama that raises questions about the nature of love, the disastrous side effects of guilt, and the function of justice. A mass shooting has taken place at a prep school in Stockholm's wealthiest suburb. Maja Norberg is eighteen years old and on trial for her involvement in the massacre where her boyfriend and best friend were killed. When the novel opens, Maja has spent nine excruciating months in jail awaiting trial. Now the time has come for her to enter the courtroom. But how did Maja, the good girl next door who was popular and excelled at school, become the most hated teenager in the country? What did Maja do? Or is it what she didn't do that brought her here?"--… (more)

I've watched the show twice before reading the book, so obv my review is gonna be a bit incluenced by that. I got the same feeling as when I was reading Game of Thrones after seeing the show, that the characters in the book get to be way more vile and ugly (Dennis in particular sticks out) compared to the book.

Honestly I still think the show is great, and the book was also good. Some things worked better on screen (Maja's breakdown during the Funeral episode, easily one of the best scenes in the entire show), and some things worked better in the book (more believeable because in the show they definitely sacrificed some of that in favour of a good story, and you know what, I don't mind).

But it's also a very good book. When I first saw the show I was convinced Maja was guilty, but after a rewatch and having read the book I guess she isn't. She is still extremely unlikeable though, but that's the point. She is judgemental and a bit of an asshole, and I never get the feeling reading the book that we're supposed to completely agree with her worldview. At least I hope not, because that's something I like about it.

Not generally into crime books that aren't true crime but I guess I have to give the author's other book (books?) a chance now. ( )

Not what I was hoping for. Kind of dull. ( )

I found myself thinking about this book whenever real life interrupted and it had to be put down. None of the characters are likeable but it really made me think. There are parts that went on longer than necessary and should have been edited down, IMO. Overall a compelling story told very well. ( )

This was an unexpectedly complex and thought provoking book. There are no easy answers to the difficult questions it presents, like real life the people and acts are all in shades of gray, but it is engrossing and interesting. My only quibble would be that it may be a little long but since that length mostly served to add depth to the story and characters it is not in any way a big flaw. I think for me the overall story here is about our idea of "guilt" in both the legal sense, which is handled quite deftly and I assume accurately for a Swedish court, and in terms of, for lack of a better term, "real life." We all want answers, definitive and absolute answers when a horrible event has occurred and often that need drives us to hold someone accountable legally. But even outside of the legal questions there are ideas about someone being guilty of causing or not preventing them. Fascinating stuff. I love how Giolito has the voice of Maja, our protagonist, down. The length does allow us to really move along with Maja as she recounts the facts and works through the emotions of this school shooting story. I'm still thinking about some of the issues raised here and that is something I love in fiction. ( )

Lying next to the left-hand row of desks is Dennis; as usual he's wearing a graphic T, ill-fitting jeans, and untied tennis shoes. Dennis is from Uganda. He says he's seventeen, but he looks like a fat twenty-five year old. He's a student in the trade school, and he lives in Sollentuna in a home for people like him. Samir has ended up next to hi, on his side. Samir and I are in the same class because Samir managed to be accepted to our school's special program in international economics and social sciences. -The Classroom
