Part of a quite good series of books by Alan Morehead, a war correspondent, written during and immediately following events of WW2 Not well documented or literary masterpieces but gritty recollections of someone who was there. A slim book that captures the essence, warts and all, of possibly, Britain's best WW 2 general. Like the US, there were not a lot of outstanding general officer's in the British ranks. He did figure out how to beat Rommel in the desert but his record subsequently was spotty at best. Italy was a campaign where the soldiers were greater than their generals. Should he have taken Caen on D Day is still a controversial question? Arnhem and his failure to take Antwerp were serious disasters which he capped by declaring himself the saviour in the Battle of the Bulge when his forces arrived too late to be much involved. ( )
