Tobias is a twenty-five-year-old virgin, bored with his life, and unsatisfied with how average and unremarkable he is--until he sees a silver unicorn. When the beautiful creature begins appearing to him regularly, Tobias doesn't know if it's a cruel joke or some form of mental illness. What interest could the unicorn have in someone like him? Searching for it in a park at night leads to an attack on Tobias, but he's rescued by a handsome and mysterious man called Amar. Something about the man calls to Tobias, and suddenly his life feels a lot less ordinary and a lot less lonely. But fate can be harsh, and the biggest challenge to Tobias and Amar's relationship has yet to reveal itself. Just like unicorns are unique, if legendary, animals who are different from shifters (as far as I understand), ‘More Beautiful than a Unicorn’ is not like most of the other stories in this year’s Daily Dose collection. While Amar is a character who takes both human and unicorn form, he cannot shift at will and the rules of his existence are unlike those of “regular” shifters – if there is such a thing. In line with his more legendary roots, the story reads much like a fairy tale in both language and the events that happen as Tobias slowly unravels the truth of who Amar is.

Tobias is quite an ordinary man, or so he thinks. He is shy, has a data-entry job that lets him survive but doesn’t give him a lot of financial wiggle room, and he is still a virgin at twenty-five. There wasn’t any indication that made me suspect he is anything other than ordinary until I got deeper into his story. First, he kept seeing a unicorn pretty much wherever he goes. Then a beautiful stranger turns up but he’s only ever there for a short time before vanishing for weeks on end. Tobias thinks he’s gone mad until he finds out the truth – and then his real troubles begin. He turns out to be very courageous, but what Amar reveals next, and what he asks Tobias to do may just be too difficult.

If you like stories with a mystery, if mythological creatures and legends have you fascinated, and if you’re looking for a fantastical read with fairy-tale-like logic, a deeply romantic love sorry, and a magical solution to the main characters’ issues, then you will probably like this short story as much as I do. It swept me off my feet into a different world – a realm of incredible possibilities.
