Enjoyable enough, but unlike some of Peck's other books, there's no reason for adults to read it. Add a star for readers under 12. ( )I liked the way they told the story from a little boys perspective with a brother going to war. I also liked how the time changed and the boy got older throughout the book. AHS/AH In a time of innocence the Second World War comes into Day Bowman’s young life. His older brother joins the fledgling air core and is sent off to Europe. The story tells of how Davy’s families deal with rationing, a son in combat and the disruption of war in family life. A war story with a happy ending for Davy’s family. I like historical fiction set in this period. However I think most kids want "battle books" not stories about the homefront. IF they are willing to give it a try, they will get into the story. A boy in Illinois remembers the homefront years of World War II, especially his two heroes--his brother in the Air Force and his father, who fought in the previous war. no reviews | add a review

World War II has invaded Davy’s homefront boyhood. There’s an air raid drill in the classroom, and being a kid is an endless scrap drive. Bill has joined up, breaking their dad’s heart. It’s an intense, confusing time, and one that will invite Davy to grow up in a hurry.
Still, Richard Peck is a master of comedy, and even in this novel of wartime uncertainty, he infuses his tale with humor: oddballs and rascals and boyhood misadventures alongside the poignant moments. This is one of Richard Peck’s very finest novels—a tender, unforgettable portrait of the World War II homefront and a family’s love.
