I did enjoy Home especially the end, I found the first 3/4 of the book a bit slow. I really enjoyed A Spot of Bother also. I also have checked out of the library Home by Marilynne Robinson so it will be next, then I can get back to The Master unless the library notifies ... "He told me George makes a very good risotto. I recently discovered A Spot of Bother in Mt TBR (last weekend, I completely overhauled it, down from 5 teetering stacks to two less teetering stacks and found all sorts of books buried at the ... ... it is very, very funny. The "What Alistair Said When I Showed Him This Chapter" chapters are brilliant!

OTOH, I did like The Curious Dog in the Night-time. I didn't like A Spot of Bother, so don't bother. That's my HO. ... thank-you notes which seems to take up so much time! I have been reading during my absence, however. Here we go:

I enjoyed this book, but it wasn't what I expected. It was all about family dysfunction, and I appreciated the honesty.

Finally read Mark Haddon's A Spot of Bother, which we will call #49. Haddon, of course, is the author of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, which was so brilliant and unique. With ... A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon ... this book. I think I cried for the last 20 pages, I was so moved. Worth every moment I spent reading this one.

These are the dirty little secrets everyone has in their family but they don't share with anyone but those closest to them. George has recently retired and is facing his own mortality. His wife Jean is having an affair. Their daughter Kat ... Finished A Spot of Bother a couple days ago and have started in on Two for the Dough by Janet Evanovich. I always sort of resisted her books, but I was made to read the first one by a very insistent friend, and have decided to keep going. I like that I can throw one in for a day or so's break ... My review of A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon is posted. You can read it here. ... was going. Still I persisted until I finally "got" the book about page 70. Then I loved it.
Recently, I abandoned A Spot of Bother at page 80 because I didn't like one of the characters. A few days later I picked it up again, and now I have more sympathy for that character and I think ... ... Destruction (loved) and I'm letting it sink in before beginning my review. Really enjoyed it, though.

Op mijn verlanglijstje staan de Murakami's en ook net Een Akkefietje van Mark Haddon aangeschaft. Kerry - I read A Spot of Bother a couple of years ago, and I liked it too. I still haven't read Haddon's other book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, but I've heard good things about it too. ... year after avoiding it for a while and found it very entertaining. A similarly entertaining read would be Mark Haddon's A spot of bother. #145 A Spot of Bother is definitely not The Curious Case of the Dog in the Nighttime (no touchstone? or have I got the title wrong?), but I really enjoyed it, at least while I was reading it. Afterwards, it didn't stick with me like the other did/has. Decided that A Spot of Bother wasn't for me.
Edited to add that I've actually returned to this book, twice, because I really like a couple of the characters and want to see what happens to them. George remains painful to read -- talk about a guy who needs real problems to give him a dose ... Decided I'd read as much of A Spot of Bother as I could stand. Wasn't a bad book, per se, just pretty much hated the character of George (and his hypochrondria) and since most of the book hinges on that (ugh) I decided I had better things to do with my time.
Started The Kommandant's ... ... pleasure read, The Last Olympian. Half done. Just have to find out how Percy and friends save Olympus. Also reading A Spot of Bother (amusing, but also a bit annoying; not sure I'll finish it, though it reads quickly), and A Crime So Monstrous which I'm also half way through (good, ... I've left Korea and West Virginia in Lark and Termite (fabulous) and have journeyed to England with A Spot of Bother. The book is fun, but not nearly as good. From the library:

That is one of my favorite books. #97 - A Spot Of Bother by Mark Haddon, audiobook. Loved this book! This author really knows how to get to the heart of people's psychosis/neuroses! You could really feel for the characters. I also enjoyed the British humor. >185: FicusFan, The Curious Incident of a Dog in the Night-Time is one of my all time favorite books. I also enjoyed A Spot of Bother but I think 'The Curious Incident' is in a class of its own.
