This album looks at the history and surviving examples of the public water fountain and drinking trough. These forgotten items of street furniture were the outward manifestations of a major shift in public health policy and political opinion, as the Victorians grasped the importance of a clean, wholesome supply of drinking water in preventing disease and helping alleviate the conditions of ordinary people in British towns and cities. It also looks at the provision of drinking troughs for draught animals, from a time before mechanised street transport.
