Epigraph
Dedication
To the crew of the "scoutship" IGS Initiative, for sharing the STAR TREK dream and for tolerating a "commanding officer," who is "out there" as often as she is "down here":
Lt Cmdr Loudon Stanford,

who ignores all of us as much as he can.
Lt Ruth Vance,

who wishes she could ignore what we do to the computers and tries to keep everyone else organized.
Lt JoAnn Long,

who sees everything pass across her desk - over and over and over.
Lt Craig Hall,

who put up with four years of this insanity before transferring to Starbase Houston.
First words
Captain's Log, Stardate 44839.2:

The Enterprise is en route to Beltaxiyan Minor, a Jaradan outpost in the Archimedes Sector.

Book description
EVERY JARADA IN THE ROOM WAS FIGHTING WITH A SAVAGERY THAT TOOK WORF ABACK

A Klingon warrior's greatest joy was in battle, but there was something unhealthy about this melee. The scene reminded Worf of sharks in a feeding frenzy, when the scent of blood sent them attacking anything, even one of their own. Those sharks were no more sane than these Jarada, and Worf knew he must report this to the captain immediatly.

Suddenly, the insectoid aliens turned and charged Worf. the Jarada, Worf noted, outnumbered him forty to one. With odds like that, only a fool or a berserker would fight if he had any alternative. Worf decided to take the only sane option available.

He snatched his blankets from his bench and tangled them into the legs of the two leading Jarada. They went down and several others piled into them. While the mob was sorting itself out, Worf executed a high-speed evacuation in search of a less exposed position...
