10. The No.1 Ladi ... ... it as a shorter, easier read than the brothers, and a bit of a thriller. I have a book in my 1010 about the investigator (The Gentle Axe), so it would be good to reread this one beforehand. I just started The Gentle Axe which features the detective from Crime and Punishment as he works through another case. Of course it isn't Dostoevsky, but the writing is quite elegant. ... of the finalists.

The Gentle Axe by R.N. Morris, interesting cover. Did a test read, but was not thrilled about another book set in 1860s (Russia) after The Meaning of Night. Too much ... The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon and The Gentle Axe by RN Norris. The problem is that I'm stuck in Strangers on a Train. Guy is being insufferably whiny and pathetic and I can barely stand him anymore. Reminds me of Raskolnikov in his angst-ridden dithering. Or Hamlet. Bah. ... ... Heath
