An epistolary picture book! It's a really charming story of a girl who goes to live in the city during the Great Depression. The letters she writes home tell the story of her attempts to make her stern uncle smile by growing flowers. ( )

I wish I owned a copy of every book the Stewart and Small duo have created. ( )

Sweet book set in the 1930's told in a series of letters by Lydia Grace. After her father loses his job, she goes to live with an uncle in the city. She inherited a love of gardening from her grandma and takes that love with her to the city. Lovely illustrations as well. ( )

Sarah Stewart tells a wonderful tale with real heart and real characters. This book is beautifully illustrated but the real shinning aspect of it is the story line. ( )

Set in 1935-1936 and told in letters from a girl - first to her Uncle Jim in the city, then back home to Mama, Papa, and Grandma in the country - The Gardener is the story of a girl who travels to live with her uncle in the city during the Great Depression. She helps in his bakery, makes friends with others in the apartment building, and grows a secret garden on the roof with packets of seeds her grandma sends. ( )
