Another Country (original 1982; edition 1982)

I ended up re-reading this play after it cropped up in another context. Set in the 1930s, in a public school, Another Country has at its centre two boys, Bennett and Judd, who both fail to fit in. The former because of his growing realisation of his homosexuality, the latter because of his communism. A film version starring Rupert Everett as Bennett (he had played the part in the stage versions earlier) and Colin Firth as Judd was made a couple of years later. I managed to tape it off television once, but the tape has since worn out, so it's been a few years since I last saw it or read the play. ( )
