In it, she wrote that she sometimes looked at her boyfriend and thought, “But will he love me like Calvin loves Alice?” After reading this poignant little volume, it occurred to me that it wouldn’t be a bad way to measure a relationship. Trillin clearly thought Alice was the most beautiful, interesting, and loving woman on the planet. And instead of simply lamenting her death, he uses these few short pages to celebrate her life. It’s a meaningful tribute. Calvin loved Alice and wrote this book as a tribute to her after her death. A lovely, small memoir by Calvin Trillin about the woman who was his world. It made me wish I had known her. Though I'm a terrible sentimental slob about most issues such as this, knew Alice had died from complications of lung cancer, have battled cancer myself, and expected to sob my way through the book, Trillin wrote this memoir with such kindness, humor, and love, that I felt as if I were sitting across from him and he were matter-of-factly telling me about the things he loved most about her. Essentially, it's a book about two lovely people: Alice and Calvin. I loved this because it was a long and beautiful love letter to his wife. Gives you faith in marriage! A touching in memorium to the author's wife, who recently died of lung cancer. The couple's relationship is tenderly depicted, but I found myself not liking Alice all that much. She is definitely a complex person, but she also seems a bit superficial and showy at times. no reviews | add a review
