With the family farm failing, her parents sent ten-year-old Fanny her to Mount Hope, Ohio to live with her aunt. As the years pass, Fanny becomes very good at basket weaving and does more than she share of the chores, but she still feel estranged from the family. The author did a fine job showing the difference between acting pious and being pious. There are mild relational conflicts. Unlike other Amish novel, the characters are allowed to face failure and lose. ( )
