Congrats! And a good book for hitting the goal!! I really like the ending of The Somnambulist too. The Domino Men is Barnes' follow-on set now in the same world as The Somnambulist . It's pretty good too!

I finished The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes and have just started When I Lived in Modern Times by Linda Grant.
There's another set in modern-day that's a follow-on called The Domino Men. I thought it was better than The Somnambulist and really expanded the backstory of the world Barnes had created.
85. The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes. I do love a Victorian or Edwardian historical mystery! I liked the beginning of this novel but found the ending just satisfactory. The writing style was good but the introduction of new characters in the middle was -hmm- not as well done as I would ...

I've been eying The Somnambulist and will now have to read it. Thanks for the review! I can't resist an unreliable narrator!

I can't remember enough to summarize everything since I've posted, but I'll summarize some main ones:

Another newer book that is somewhat reminiscent of Neverwhere is The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes.
And, yes, Guy Gavriel Kay is a great read-alike for The Hobbit.
This sounds like a great book.
I haven't read The Somnambulist and I'm adding both Jonathan Barnes books to my list.
Started The Domino Men, Barnes' follow-on to The Somnambulist . It's pretty good so far, reminds me somewhat of The Atrocity Archives - part James Bond, part H. P. Lovecraft.
I'm about halfway through The Domino Men, sort of a sequel to The Somnambulist . It's excellent so far!
... Coyle and She Said Yes by Misty Bernall.
That's all my 5 star reads for February. :)
But here are my 4.5's
The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill and Shadowland by Meg Cabot
Thanks, DrN. I enjoyed The Somnambulist . It was as much fun to read as listening to the poor librarian call and let me know that it was in. She couldn't quite get her tongue around the name. I'll be on the look out for his new one.
For those who enjoyed The Somnambulist , I just learned that Barnes has written a second book in the same world - The Domino Men. I've seen a pretty good review of it, and it's now on order for me at the library!
Catey's review matched up with my thoughts on The Somnambulist pretty well. I liked the book, especially for it's weirdness and especially for the reveal at the end, and Barnes pulls in a hint of steampunk in the mix that's right up my alley. But I read weird things that sometimes aren't for ...

51F.) The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes
A kind of half mystery, half suspense novel, with a surprise narrator and a colorful cast of characters. This book had one really stand out feature: A pair of monsters that would put Clive Barker's to shame. Seriously.

Currently reading The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes - I may not have gotten one of the coveted Early Reviewer copies but I managed to get first on the reserve list at my library! So far it's pretty strange; I think the ending is going to determine how much I like it or not.
I'm currently ...
No, it is not currently a record. The current record is 1323 requests for The Somnambulist . After a very quick scan of all books, it appears that current requests-to-copies record is 47.65 for the The Resurrectionist.
35. The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes
I really liked this book.
Today I started The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes. So far it's pretty good. After it I have The Ministry of Special Cases and Clown Girl.
... books were seriously fantastic and definitely favorites for life, not just the month.

Finished The Somnambulist yesterday evening. I've got a review up if anyone's interested, but in short, I liked it. Started Lost in a Good Book, am about halfway through. I have to finish this one before the wife gets back from the quilt festival tomorrow evening since she's reading it and I'm ...
14. The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes
The Somnambulist is a mashed up stew of Holmes pastiche, occultish mystery, steampunk-ish elements, and just plain weirdness. I thoroughly enjoyed it - read it front to back with only one break, which is unusual for me - especially the unreliable ...
... The son's away this evening for a fundraiser for Worldvision, so I've got the house to myself! I'll be finishing up The Somnambulist .
The Somnambulist really does sound intriguing. I like your description too, weird is good :) And I almost always enjoy books set in that era. Another for my wishlist.
78 - Glad to hear about The Somnambulist drneutron. I've yet to read it, heard some so-so reviews, and have been putting it off. I like your description!
Finished Mistborn last night, loved it as very nearly everybody who's reviewed it on LT has. Started The Somnambulist - this is one freakin' good book! Part Sherlock pastiche, part occult mystery, part plain weird.
Finished The Somnambulist . Hope to finish Frankenstein: A Cultural History tomorrow. That's six books down and forty-four more to go.
Just bought and started The Somnambulist . Also bought new hardback copies of Dune and Dune Messiah.
... TBR stack waiting to be read is:

I can't believe I'm one of the first to get it. Last time it took weeks before I got The Somnambulist .
Now reading The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes. =) I've just recently rediscovered my love for mystery stories. I know I grew up on mysteries, the Nancy Drew kind hehe.
The Somnambulist is based in old London. It is somewhat Sherlock Holmes-y in feel, with touches of the grotesque. ...
13. The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes
This was a hugely enjoyable romp--a pseudo-Victorian mystery, with a hefty dose of the fantastic and the grotesque. Far better than something like The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters, this is sparkly and grimy all in one go. Not, I'd imagine, ...
I finally got my copy of The Somnambulist on January 16 (in Pasadena, CA), just when I was beginning to think it had been lost. Details of format are as previously stated; I entered it manually, with no ISBN.
1) Mr. Vertigo by PaulAuster
2) The Prestige by Christopher Priest
3) The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes
As something of a purist regarding my catalog data, I refused to enter a false ISBN for the Somnambulist typescript. I did, however, start with the amazon.com data to add it to my library, deleting the ISBN, so that it would be associated with the proper "work" record.
... reading The Yacoubian Building and The Pesthouse, having eaten up A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers, The Somnambulist , and The Book Thief this weekend.
The Book Thief annoyed me intensely. Dictionary for Lovers started as an irritation but crept up into the back of my ...
... Some I'm really eager to read (like the Mary Doria Russell, which I didn't snag), some just sound interesting (like The Somnambulist and Gifted: A Novel, which I did get and loved). Can't get the touchstone to work for Gifted.
Most of the non-fiction has been so niche-oriented that I ...
I read and reviewed The Somnambulist . I enjoyed it all the way through; in fact, I might have liked the end parts of the book better than the early chapters! Sure, it was bound like the first draft of my dissertation, but luckily it was a much better read. (-:, And the binding is still very ...
My review of The Somnambulist is up.

... that have REALLY spiked my interest though there have been a few more I found interesting enough to throw my name in for. The Somnambulist showed how popular the (real) fantasy can be.
Interesting. There doesn't seem to be a break-out book so far like there was for The Somnambulist last month. It led early and finished strong. This month the requests are more tightly clustered.
Thanks for letting us know, Abby. (My guess on The Somnambulist , which several people got very early and several are still waiting for, is that a few of them got shipped before Christmas and then the rest of ours didn't get out until after New Year's.)
As long as you give us a little extra ...
Anyone else still waiting on The Somnambulist ? A few people got it right away and I'm still waiting two weeks later.
I have read and reviewed The Somnambulist . I posted a (very lightly) abridged version of the review on the book's page here, and also on my blog, aartichapati.blogspot.com
Overall, not sure what to make of it- it started off strong, but then kind of lost me. I didn't like the ending at all.
My copy of The Somnambulist arrived today. I made it through the first two chapters before I had to start making dinner, and figured I should add a note here.

Now I must contemplate my vast TBR list. Some upcoming books might include:
The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes (not from the Early Reviewer program, but I snagged an ARC from my Barnes & Noble)
I Love You, Beth Cooper by Larry Doyle

Just finished The Somnambulist --enjoyed it greatly and the problem of the manuscript format was solved when the binding fell apart and I was able to hold as many/few pages at a time as I wanted.
Posted my review here on the book's page and at http://bookchatcentral.yuku.com/
In summary, it's ...
... my first Early Reviewers book Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell and have started on my second ER book, The Somnambulist . Also trying to get through The Omnivore's Dilemma which was my book club's selection for December, oops :)
I received my copy of The Somnambulist , but there is no instruction on when reviews would be "due," or if we should send reviews to the publisher directly, or anything like that. Does anyone have any light to shed on this? Much appreciated!

I was also lucky enough to snag the ARC of The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes that we got in at my B&N (I've never even tried to get any of the Early Reviewer books from LibraryThing)
Finished The Somnambulist which had a wonderfully entertaining and absorbing first 220 pages or so but was ultimately disappointing. Even the title of the book is a misnomer, I think. Can't say more without spoilers.
I will return to Women of Algiers in their Apartment.
... historical fantasy. I have a whole historical fantasy tag, really!
And, I just got notice that I was chosen to receive The Somnambulist as an ARC, which I think would also fit.
... Women of Algiers in their Apartment by Assia Dejbar but I was looking for some lighter 'holiday' reading so I picked up The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes. I was given the arc by one of my former bosses at the bookstore and it's been languishing here for months. I see it was the single-most ...
While I have one foot still in Algeria, I decided to take a quick and light weekend trip to Victorian England with The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes. The ARC (given to me by my former place of employment) had been languishing for months while I kept to my required reading but it be the holiday ...
I am getting The Somnambulist . I'm pretty excited. It's the only one I requested this month, and I *thought* I had a pretty good chance of getting a copy, as it fits right into my reading preferences here on LibraryThing :-) I'm pretty excited! I have a weird idea in my head that it's a cross ...
I really wanted The Somnambulist but I got Is God Sad? instead--better than nothing! I'm sure it's because half or more of my catalog is my kids' books.
I'm one of the lucky few who managed to snag The Somnambulist . Hooray!
Aw, I didn't get anything. I was really wishing hard for The Somnambulist . :(
I am SO EXCITED, I snagged The Somnambulist (did I spell it right?) and can't wait to lay paws on it.
Lucky me, I also got The Story of Forgetting from the bonus batch and I'm loving it.
THANK YOU Santa LT
Thanks andyl. I scan a couple of sites for upcoming UK SF&F, Locus and The SF Site, but somehow I missed The Somnambulist . Early Reviewers is the first I remember hearing of it.
for the people trying to get the somnambulist youve actually got a 1 in 18.1 chance of getting it which isnt that bad actually. although there is still a week left for those 5000 members to put in a bid for it! then your chances go down to a 1 in 83.3.
For those who don't win and still want to read The Somnambulist now rather than wait until US publication in February I would just like to mention The Book Depository (I have no commercial links with them) as they have free worldwide shipping.
#49 and #64
The Somnambulist has been out ages in the UK - the hardcover and large format paperback were published last February. The cheap paperback is out on Jan 10th.
So it seems that there are now 60 copies of The Somnambulist available. Unfortunately I don't think that's enough to help me, but it's still great!
edit: I almost got in there before Abby, but not quite.
... blog . There are 60 copies of The Somnambulist . Not quite 1,000, but closer to it than 20 was!
im just interested in when any UK books are coming in. i requested the somnambulist thinking ooh that looks good. then logged back in a few minutes later and did a double check before i realised none were for the UK!
>63 by synagogue librarian do you literally mean a librarian for the ...
Well since I have a hard time believing EVERY ER person requested The Somnambulist I would hazard a guess there are more yet.
In 24 hours The Somnambulist has become the most requested book in ER history. William Morrow should be pleased. Question: Has this book already been released in the UK by Gollancz?
... Tudor/Elizabethan England.) That said, two of the fictional works caught my attention, Pushing Up Daisies and The Somnambulist . In the latter case, I think it's the "turn-of-the-century London" thing, but I'm not quite sure why Pushing Up Daisies appealed to me.
The only book that particularly appeals to me is The Somnambulist , which already has almost 300 requests after just a couple of hours, so I guess I'm not getting anything this time around.
#30 The Somnambulist does indeed look like it will be the hardest book to snag for December.
... to my tastes. The list definitely improved toward the bottom, though. I ended up requesting three - Now You See Him, The Somnambulist (which looks to be the most requested at this point), and Mossad Exodus. There were some other decent-looking books from Gefen, but the Shimron one ...
