The prime object of this work is to provide colour illustrators of the group of larger moths known collectively as the macrolepidoptera, and so enable all those interested in this subject to identify by wing pattern almost all the species likely to be found in the British Isles.

Preface.
The scientific names, English names, and classification used follow Bradley, J. D. & Fletcher, D. S. (1979) A Recorder's Log Book of British Butterflies and Moths, modified where necessary with additional and revised nomenclature.

Introduction.
This family is a member of the Exoporia, a primitive suborder of Lepidoptera, comprising many medium- to large-sized species, of which five are found in the British Isles.
