While I have not read the original story (though now I am interested) I was impressed by this shortened version, and can say that I honestly didn't know where it was going. A brief summary: a young man wins the hand of a girl he meets at a village fair through taking advantage of the superstitions of the father of the girl and the villagers. Spirin's art is truly breathtaking and this book is worth the time if only to look at the pictures. This would be a good book to read to late elementary school kids as a jumping off point to talk about prejudices and why people are quick to make assumptions about others (and how to deal with the aforementioned topics).
