I enjoyed The Reluctant Fundamentalist for its story but it is not as good as all the hype would have you believe!

His bitterness (rage?) seems to be more founded on being an unwitting victim of 911 at a time when he was struggling to maintain his Eastern identity and conflicted about his love of the U.S.

I finished The Reluctant Fundamentalist this morning and moved right on to The Samurai's Garden by Gail Tsukiyama. Looks like a quiet read, which I'm happy for today. 63. The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid. Not a great read - I got weary of the second person/conversational POV, it's a very awkward and difficult technique and not pulled off very well here. I expected more substance to this book. ... a first read for me, so what do I know of new translation???). Also on deck, more Jane Austen, a couple of mysteries, The Reluctant Fundamentalist and more Steinbeck. That's just for starters! 2008 will be another good reading year, I'm sure. I'm underwhelmed by the inclusion of On Chesil Beach, Mister Pip, and The Reluctant Fundamentalist and very disappointed by the exclusion of Gifted and What Was Lost. Wouldn't it have been nice to have a first-timer on the short list? Oh ... ... yet?

I love LT and PBS! Woo hoo! (13) The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid - This is a quick, page turning read. On the one hand, an interesting (and appropriately one-sided) conversation between Pakistan and the United States, on the other, oddly unsatisfying in some way I can't quite put my finger on. It's ... I got distracted from The Yacoubian Building in Cairo and am in Lahore with The Reluctant Fundamentalist; but that's going to be very quickly read - it is a fast-reading page-turner.
I'm also about to tour India with this month's Poetry Magazine's Indian Poetry Portfolio (I've started a ... ... listed books are available here. The Welsh Girl has been out here for several months; Mister Pip, Consolation, and The Reluctant Fundamentalist are, too. That said, I was in Border's today and couldn't find them, although they are listed online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Border's ... A_musing, while The Reluctant Fundamentalist shows a personal transformation it is less religious than one would think (or, in my case, expect). I'm tempted to say it is almost nationalistic but then that is not quite the word either. ... I've almost picked up The Yacoubian Building a couple of times; the other one I keep thinking about picking up is The Reluctant Fundamentalist.
Lindsacl, one of the things I found interesting about the book was that it was entirely in her head - she resisted the temptation to get ... #43, avaland, I actually haven't read The Reluctant Fundamentalist, but I did thoroughly enjoy The Yacoubian Building.

And I agree with rebeccanyc, that The Yacoubian Building is better than The Reluctant Fundamentalist ... I’ve read anything better (from the long list) yet, but it’s early days. The subject matter and actual storyline of The Reluctant Fundamentalist intrigued and impressed me, but I found the narrative concept so contrived and as a result very, very irritating.
I’m halfway ... I have left Lahore, Pakistan (The Reluctant Fundamentalist) and have been in Bougainville, the largest of the Solomon Islands off New Guinea with Mister Pip, by Lloyd Jones. The beginning of the book doesn't seem to indicate the specific setting so I begged Amandameale for help (book was her ... >90 the audio of Middlesex is indeed fabulous!

The Clef ... I gave up on reading The Reluctant Fundamentalist. When I heard the author interviewed on NPR, I was sold on reading it...but after about 30 pages, I am finding that the way in which the book is narrated bothers me a bit. So, reluctantly, I've put it down, and picked up I Know This Much Is True ... Has anyone read The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid? I started it this evening, and so far, I'm not enthralled with it. Does anyone have any opinions on it? ... recommend it enough!!
