Space opera is best for breaking those blues. Vernor Vinge, A Fire Upon the Deep will grab you and keep the concepts flying. Then there are the Culture books... I'm not sure where to start, but Excession is a good one that doesn't bog down. If you like the harder stuff, then give Schild's Ladde ...

#84 - I'll see if I can track down A Fire Upon the Deep to follow the two books I mentioned above.

... of her books have female protagonists. And your description of her writing style is sexist crap. As for Vinge, I'd say A Fire Upon the Deep was his best.

... copy last week and look forward to reading it, but I'm passing on the recommendation based on its fame. I also recommend A Fire Upon the Deep. Great fun and a true "space opera", but in a good way.

... points: * Scalzi's Old Man's War: because it is a funny, action-packed read and a bit Hienlenesque. * Vinge's Fire Upon the Deep: because it engages classic themes of space opera and first contact in a distinctive and entertaining way. If you like either one of them, they have ...

17. A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge Such a good book! There are enough fascinating ideas, interesting characters, and twists'n'turns in this novel to make up 10 ordinary sci-fi books. 256 days, 17 books, 6258 pages pace = 24.2 books / year or 8923 pages / year Drat! My pace ...

Dan Simmons's Hyperion series is excellent, if a little bit more cerebral than Reynolds. You could also try A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge. Space opera at its very finest. As crazybatcow says, Peter F Hamilton is well considered in SF circles, though I personally ...

I started A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge last night. It's a re-read, but I don't remember the story and I do remember really liking it. I found a copy used at Powell's so I couldn't resist.

... stand. Most aliens in SF are just anthropomorphic simulacra in green suits. The "hive mind" creature in Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep was pretty good, but I read that many years ago when I was younger and my cynicism not as high (or is it, my standards were lower?). :)

I would say I'm a Vinge fan and I liked A Fire Upon the Deep, but I simply couldn't finish A Deepness in the Sky. The beginning was sooo slooooooow. I wanted to like it, I really did. :( Random: The title "A Fire Upon the Deep" gives me goose bumps.

And speaking of fantasy... I finished my group read book, A Fire Upon The Deep, and decided to try something a little lighter - both reading and weight... The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. So far it is very... patronising.

How about Vernor Vinge. We have (although some stragglers may still be) reading A Fire Upon The Deep as one of the group reads and I think it should fit in well with what you want. His other books are also really good reads. Some Paul McAuley would fit in - The Quiet War and The Se ...

For those who have read the prequel, A Deepness in the Sky, does the person who's memories become Pham's in Fire appear in the prequel as part of the Qeng Ho? Or is this before his time?

#93. Is A Fire Upon the Deep pure SF, or does it lean toward Fantasy like G.R.R. Martin (whom I love)? #94. Just so you'll know, BrainFlakes is my middle name--I had dandruff as an infant and a nurse made a mis-diagnosis . . .

7 - A Fire Upon the Deep -- scifi

Hi, Karen, What are you reading now? I am reading a scifi book called A Fire Upon the Deep and also The Brothers Karamazov. They are both rather long, so I am not reading too fast. Have a great weekend! --BJ

Next, Rainbows End by Vernor Vinge. This is Vernor Vinge's third Hugo for best novel, after A Fire Upon the Deep and A Deepness in the Sky. I thought the first two were fantastic. I like this one as well, but it is perhaps not quite as interesting to me personally because it is not ...

I've not actually started A Fire Upon the Deep yet, although I plan to do so next week. And it'll probably take me about a week to finish. But I've no problem with kicking off the selection for the next book now. I wonder, though, if three choices is going to give us enough books common across ...

I'm planning to tackle A Fire Upon the Deep for the group read, but at the moment I'm halfway through Gwyneth Jones' Spirit: or the Princess of Bois Dormant. I might write about the Vinge afterwards, but no promises. I will definitely write about the Jones.

I'm a Vinge fan--I liked both FIRE UPON THE DEEP and A DEEPNESS IN THE SKY. RAINBOW'S END was pretty good but not in their league (in this man's view). I would give FIRE and DEEPNESS both a rating between ***1/2 and **** (out of a possible perfect 5-star designation, a feat no SF book I'v ...

finished a reread of vernor vinge's fire upon the deep for the group SF read. FUtD IS a good, classic large scale SF space opera - too long as there was too much down time as the various groups sought to create alliances to kill all earthlings and their friends; save human lovers everywhere, ...

Book 28 Okay, Susan, Miss Seldon's Suitors arrived yesterday, and I set aside A Fire Upon the Deep and dove in. I found it entertaining and a good representative of a light romance. However, it wasn't Heyer. (But then, who is?) Here are my caveats. The characters are drawn with broad ...
