Space opera is best for breaking those blues. Vernor Vinge, A Fire Upon the Deep will grab you and keep the concepts flying. Then there are the Culture books... I'm not sure where to start, but Excession is a good one that doesn't bog down. If you like the harder stuff, then give Schild's Ladde ... #84 - I'll see if I can track down A Fire Upon the Deep to follow the two books I mentioned above. ... of her books have female protagonists. And your description of her writing style is sexist crap.
As for Vinge, I'd say A Fire Upon the Deep was his best. ... copy last week and look forward to reading it, but I'm passing on the recommendation based on its fame.
I also recommend A Fire Upon the Deep. Great fun and a true "space opera", but in a good way.

17. A Fire upon the Deep, Vernor Vinge - reread; LT group read; some of the ideas in this struck me as less convincing this time around, nor did I think the climax was that ... Dan Simmons's Hyperion series is excellent, if a little bit more cerebral than Reynolds.
You could also try A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge. Space opera at its very finest. As crazybatcow says, Peter F Hamilton is well considered in SF circles, though I personally ... I started A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge last night. It's a re-read, but I don't remember the story and I do remember really liking it. I found a copy used at Powell's so I couldn't resist. ... stand.
Most aliens in SF are just anthropomorphic simulacra in green suits.
The "hive mind" creature in Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep was pretty good, but I read that many years ago when I was younger and my cynicism not as high (or is it, my standards were lower?). :)

The title A Fire Upon the Deep gives me goose bumps. It suggests events that determine the fate of the world (in fact it turns out to be the entire Milky Way galaxy).
And of course you have to love Great Mambo Chicken And The Transhuman Conditi ... I would say I'm a Vinge fan and I liked A Fire Upon the Deep, but I simply couldn't finish A Deepness in the Sky. The beginning was sooo slooooooow. I wanted to like it, I really did. :(

I only read the first two books of the New Sun, and am still on page 109 of A Fire Upon the Deep, which I myself nominated for the read. So I forced my way through this. I agree, not a novel, no characters or graceful prose. A history, a ponderous ... ... with Rama has a) almost no plot, b) certainly no resolution, and c) not aged gracefully.
The recent group read of A Fire Upon the Deep from 1992 has shown that it hasn't aged well. The use of USENET as a central idea just seems quaint and silly now... and will appear completely foreign ... ... would disagree with that. Of course that could also lead to them re-evaluating modern novels - for example if one read A Fire Upon The Deep before Brainwave for example.
As for short stories there are so many available for free on the web I would probably pass over a list of stories (wi ... ... SPOILER WARNING for A Fire Upon the Deep:
1) Pham Nuwen learns at the end that he really did live the life he remembers, 30,000 or so years earlier. Was that ever much in doubt, during the ... I'm planning to tackle A Fire Upon the Deep for the group read, but at the moment I'm halfway through Gwyneth Jones' Spirit: or the Princess of Bois Dormant. I might write about the Vinge afterwards, but no promises. I will definitely write about the Jones. I'm a Vinge fan--I liked both FIRE UPON THE DEEP and A DEEPNESS IN THE SKY. RAINBOW'S END was pretty good but not in their league (in this man's view).
I would give FIRE and DEEPNESS both a rating between ***1/2 and **** (out of a possible perfect 5-star designation, a feat no SF book I'v ... finished a reread of vernor vinge's fire upon the deep for the group SF read.
FUtD IS a good, classic large scale SF space opera - too long as there was too much down time as the various groups sought to create alliances to kill all earthlings and their friends; save human lovers everywhere, ... Book 28
Okay, Susan, Miss Seldon's Suitors arrived yesterday, and I set aside A Fire Upon the Deep and dove in. I found it entertaining and a good representative of a light romance. However, it wasn't Heyer. (But then, who is?)

I just finished reading A Fire upon the Deep for the SF group read and as I got to near the end, I had an aha moment, probably one most of you have had long ago, but in any case it dawned on me the book was action ... ... I have a headache.
The problem is whenever I finish a Phillip K. Dick book I think about them to much.

A Fire Upon the Deep is excellent and holds up well throughout its universe and species building length ... And Farthing would be more like the mystery genre I've been reading lately. But I am really intrigued by the world of A Fire Upon the Deep, at least based on the reviews and descriptions.
You probably made a good point regarding some of the length being due to world building.

I recall for Red Mars which is a substantial tome by itself. Kress, Tepper, and Clarke are all respectable. Vernor Vinge's Fire Upon The Deep is also important if you want to make sure you read current classics of science fiction.

Oh, too much there to go through one by one! I put A Fire upon the Deep aside for awhile. The plot is a good one, but it crawls. I'm about halfway through Golden Witchbreed and I think I'll start The Spheres of Heaven next. Oh dear, another title that the system here won't recognize. ... booksale in Woodstock(NB) today and got two boxes of books. I read Buried Deep by Rusch already and am now reading A Fire upon the Deep. a) Snow Crash was up against some tough competition - Doomsday Book, A Fire Upon The Deep, Red Mars to name but three in the same year.
