A Fire Upon the Deep is excellent and holds up well throughout its universe and species building length ... And Farthing would be more like the mystery genre I've been reading lately. But I am really intrigued by the world of A Fire Upon the Deep, at least based on the reviews and descriptions.
You probably made a good point regarding some of the length being due to world building.
