I'm forced to qualify my earlier defense of McCaffrey. I had been in the middle of Dragonsdawn, after finishing the Crystal Singer books, and I do find those 3 ... ... I read the first and second trilogies more or less as they came out - there were SF hints (the Fort Hold plate!) in Dragonquest at the latest). How would you categorize Split Infinity and the rest of the Blue Adept series? The adventure is on the fantasy side mostly, but there's also a ... ... own, and my kids each have their own Harry Potter books), and some are a complete mystery -- why do I have three copies of Dragonquest by Anne McCaffrey? ... structure, flying dragons, etc. Definitely no witchcraft, no swearing . . . a little sex (non-explicit) in Dragonflight/Dragonquest/The White Dragon, none at all in the parallel YA Dragonsong/Dragonsinger/Dragondrums.
Orson Scott Card's "Alvin Maker" series is set in an alternate 1 ... I strongly disagree with #2 - Pern really does need to be read in order. Dragonflight, dragonquest, dragonsong, dragonsinger, white dragon, dragondrums are the first several in order. I've most of the rest in order in my catalog. Anne McCaffrey's The Dragon Riders of Pern (which includes: Dragonflight, Dragonquest & The White Dragon
A Dragon Lover's Treasury of the Fantastic, A collection of short fantasy stories revolving arround Dragons edited by Margaret Weis ... What was the book that "got you into" fantasy? I think for me it was the Dragonriders of Pern, which people keep saying is not fantasy, but I think is generally more fantastical than strictly science-fiction...Besides, back in the day, fantasy and sci-fi were always together in the back corner of ... Is it (either) any good?
I've so far held off reading the pern books that don't fit into the Dragonquest timeline. Are they best read as standalones? or do they really fit into the pern history when read in published (or another) order? ... Fantasy I think of wizards, dragons, fairies, Merlin, magic, swords, Labyrinth, Brian Froud, Faeries, Lythande, Dragonriders of Pern, Conan, Harry Potter, Xena, J. R. R. Tolkein, and the like.
To me the three are totaly differant genres, I do not see the confusion.

By the second book Dragonquest, they've found old rooms in weyrs and holds which contain a microscope, a telescope, a chart of their solar system, etc. They are busy inventing
a telegraph ... ... list many years ago.
I would reccomend reading Anne Mccaffery in published order. Starts with DragonFlight, then Dragonquest then dragonsong and dragonsinger IMHO it starts to go downhill after that. DragonSong and Dragon singer are my two favourite Pern books. ROTFL.
Reminds me of when my Mum was reading the Dragonriders of Pern series. We were on a car trip, she driving, and I noticed that the speedometer was hovering around 100: "What in hell are you doing?! Look at all those bushes where troopers can hide their cars!"
