Work detailsThe Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst (2004)
I must have missed something here, but this book grated on me. It reminded me of all the worst parts of that period and constantly reminded me of Thatcher and greed. It is crafted you cannot argue with that, but a book needs to be more than that. If you like greed and Thatcher you ill like this book, otherwise avoid it and read something you really want to read. ( )I don't often give up on book after I have started reading beyond the first 50 pages. But this novel just didn't do anything for me, except I accept it is beautifully wrtten. That isn't enough. Moving on to other books. Life is too short. Beautifully written, poignant look at Margaret Thatcher's England, early 80's gay culture in its risky sunset years and a young man who sees 'The Line of Beauty' running through it all. Netflix carries the not too bad BBC miniseries of same. Couldn't get into this one at all -- maybe it's the diet of pulpy SF I've been on, but I just couldn't find anything to hook me in. The social class stuff frankly bores me, and what I'd forgive in a literary classic I couldn't get on with it here. I read a chapter, put the book down to watch Captain America (my new weakness: Marvel superheroes, or at least those played by Chris Evans, Scarlet Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Robert Downey Junior) and couldn't even remember where I'd got to. Should probably try it again someday, as I hear it praised a lot, but for now, not for me. Gay Postgraduate Student gets swept up in gay life in High Society Setting of I believe, Notting Hill.
But the plot isn’t the point. This novel’s pleasures are thick and deep, growing out of the brilliant observational powers of the main character.
