Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0345363981, Mass Market Paperback)

Cora Diemert is desperate to keep her husband's death a secret. Otherwise, she and her three small children stand no chance to save their homestead from the cattle barons intent on ruling every square inch of the New Mexico grassland. Then two men find their way to her place. One, a boy who calls himself Bill Smith, is a hard worker who seems more than willing to help her, though she suspects he's harboring a terrible secret. The other is United States Marshal Thomas Alvarez, who is unflinching in his insistence that justice be done. These two intruders are obviously sworn enemies, yet they discover they must act together to help Cora as they face the deadly onslaught of the ranchers' hired guns.
