I liked this story for many reasons. The rhyming and rhythmic language helps students practice phonological awareness skills and fluency. The language was not very detailed, which is good for emergent readers who need to begin reading short sentences before reading more complex ones. A lot of cultural-specific foods were mentioned in this story. For example, some of the sentences in the story were, “Pass the chow mien, Jane”, ”Pass the fajita, Rita”, and “Pass the flan, Juan”. Many different cultures and their foods were represented in these basic sentences. However, this multicultural book could have been improved by mentioning the countries where each food originated. There is no plot to this story and no conflict since every sentence has the same structure, but with a different name and food-related vocabulary word. This would not make the story engaging for older children, but provides many educational opportunities to younger elementary school students. The recommended ages for this story are ages 5-7, but I do not believe this book would be appropriate for children who are past first grade. This book could be beneficial for English Language Learners since it has simple vocabulary, one main theme for the vocabulary which is food, and a lot of pictures. The illustrations are interesting because they are partially drawn, and partially real pictures. This contrast makes this book unique to many others I have read. The background and the children are drawn, but the foods are all actual images. This means that students can see how these foods actually look just by seeing the pictures on every page. This is a great read aloud book for children and is simple enough for new readers to try and read independently as well. ( )
