Disclosure: I as in Korea, in the embassy, over some of the times David Straub was, and I lived through the earlier event he describes in the first chapter of this book. I was also a frequent visitor to Korea during the latter part of the 1999-2002 period which is the focus of his book. This was after I retired from the foreign service.

This book may be the only one that focuses on anti-Americanism and examines its origins and causes in so detailed a manner. I would suggest it as required reading for anyone wishing to become a Korea specialist, and also for diplomats and other officials whose duties require they know something about Korea. It treats a complex subject and bewildering array of incidents of anti-Americanism in a straightforward, readable way. ( )
