Uncanny is the right word in this title, as author Jean Harkin’s uncanny tales take readers just slightly outside their comfort zone, keeping one foot firmly grounded and promising safe landings. Real locations carry their own weight in history and mythology, as Monopoly’s “Go To Jail” becomes all too real in the title story, or a young girl loses her locket during a sweetly, almost normal family vacation in Deer Charm. She Who Watches reveals an intriguing take on the familiar, and an ivy-filled room is filled with threat and promise. Meanwhile stories on the odder side see cows stampeding a political speech, and even a famous (past) president issuing (inspiring) Tweets. But the collection’s crowning glory is a final story of Annlee ruling her dogs and domain from a wheelchair of breaking memories—a beautiful and all too human tale of human greed.

The stories are short, the titles well-chosen and the collection nicely organized to keep the reader turning pages. It’s a fun little assortment, and hopefully there will be more books to come.

Disclosure: I know the author, but this is still my honest review. ( )
