These early stories had faults and were on shaky ground but you slowly but surely get sucked in to the storyline as it unfolds. The artwork goes up a notch when John Byrne comes on board but was decent in the earliest issues. I definitely enjoyed the subtle humor like when the writing team writes themselves into the plot during the Phoenix/Firelord fight in issue 105 or Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in issue 98. You also have nods to Edgar Rice Burroughs in issue 98 if one notices the boats name is Dejah Thoris and coolest of all is the mention of Nightcrawler going to see the Star Wars film that just came out! LOL You have the birth of the Phoenix, the Corsairs and a few other first appearances which keep the issue hopping. Lots of good stuff and what I like the most is the beginning of the development of the characters, slow but you begin to get a taste of what is fully developed in the next few years of the series. ( )The beginning of the classic 70's run on X-Men. A little shaky, but lots of fun. Here is the beginning of the rise to greatness and immense popularity of the team of characters known as the X-Men. Claremont masterfully reinvents a cosmopolitan team of mutants from around the globe, after the east coast wasp whitebread incarnation we had known previously. Adding a more adult edge to their relationships it is something that worked, big-time. http://graphicsf.blogspot.com/2006/12... Why do I own this? no reviews | add a review
