It took me a little while to get into this book, as there are a lot of characters in the first chapter. However, Sue Moorcroft does a good job with characterisation, and I quickly decided that I very much liked both Ava, the hat-maker who stars in this story, and Sam, the boss at the agency where her best friends work.

There are many issues involved in this book alongside the inevitable romantic thread. Ava is in dire financial straits and has a threatening ex-boyfriend. There’s a character about to undergo chemotherapy, and a minor celebrity who needs a new image. Ava herself dreads the Christmas season, and we gradually discover why. The story moves at a good pace, with drama, misunderstandings, and an ingenious plot resolution towards the end.

More intimate detail than I'm comfortable with, and a tad too much about millinery - but on the whole I enjoyed this book very much.

Recommended, as a good holiday read. ( )

A Christmas Cracker of a Read

Sue Moorcroft's books are always a delight to read and this is no exception.

You know you will get well-drawn and attractive characters, and frequently a plot worked around a specific issue. A Christmas promise is no exception. The main protagonists, Sam and Ava are well-drawn and believable. This time, Sue Moorcroft has picked the theme of cyber-bullying in its worst manifestation, Revenge Porn, when milliner Ava splits from a badly chosen boyfriend Harvey.Harvey doesn't take it well!

Add in a fine cast of supporting characters, particularly Wendy, with terminal cancer, and Ruby, a classic WAG, with hats and viral marketing stirred into the mix, and it all makes for a typical Sue Moorcroft book. Very well written, fast-paced and gripping.

A great read for Christmas - and at any other time of year!! ( )
