The most obvious point of comparison would be with Informator's Small Encyclopedia of Chess Openings. If you're trying to choose between the two, MCO-15 is far more narrative and may subsequently be more approachable. The Small Encyclopedia of Chess Openings has the following going for it: it's more current, and it has infinitely more sample games. In essence: this one's a lot more fun to read, but the Small Encyclopedia has more breadth and depth.

Modern Chess Openings is a comprehensive look and analysis of a whole lot of different starts to the game of chess, from the basic and obvious variations that everyone knows, to things that are very obscure.

Some go very many moves deep and comment on the soundness or viability of the various branches for high level play. ( )
