I listened to this novel in an abridged version and it really underlined why I don't knowingly read abridged books. I felt that at many junctures the story was choppy and I felt myself longing for the parts that were edited out.

Baring that it was an interesting story but nowhere near the author's Kill Me. ( )

Another good read about psychologist Alan Gregory and the mysteries he unravels. ( )

Apparently this is the sequel to another book White wrote with Dr. Alan Gregory in it, but I followed it very well despite having not read the first book. In fact many sections are devoted to filling in parts of the backstory--which might almost be annoying to those already familiar with it. Dr. Gregory is experiencing problems with marriage, but those problems have to take a backseat to bigger concerns when a former patient of Dr. Gregory--who almost killed him and his family--is found to have escaped. Now Dr. Gregory is in pure survival mode as he tries to stay one step ahead of this killer bent on revenge--and who has had a lot of time to come up with an elaborate plot to obtain it.
The suspense in this book is great as the reader follows the twists and turns of frightening events imposed on Dr. Gregory by his former patient. I definitely recommend this to fans of thrillers. ( )

I have always passed Stephen White's books up at book sales, etc. Never again. His writing is wonderful, and the content held my interest until the very end. I did skip a few pages, as sometimes I get anxious (my own baggage) when not sure what is going to happen, but I skipped fewer in this book than any other. Great reading, and I recommend it highly. I have to say this was one of my least favorite of Stephen White's books BUT it was still very good. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0525949976, Hardcover)

New York Times bestselling author Stephen White brings back his popular character, psychologist Alan Gregory, to take on the sociopathic killer from White’s first novel—who, many years later, has walked away from a mental hospital, hungry for revenge.

It has been years since the mayhem was unleashed in Privileged Information. Now Michael McClelland, the brilliant, determined killer introduced in White’s first novel, has left the Colorado State Mental Hospital—and he’s coming after Alan Gregory’s family. The timing couldn’t be deadlier; like a cornered animal, Alan is in a deeply vulnerable state, facing severe doubts about his professional life, his marriage, and his own psyche. And McClelland holds the most powerful weapons of all: secrets from Alan’s past. Secrets Alan thought he had successfully buried years ago. Secrets not even his wife knows. Time is running out as Alan scrambles to outwit his nemesis while confronting each of his worst nightmares. His becomes a captivating psychological journey into the events that forever change us, and the relentless drumbeat of the past. Faithful readers of the series and newcomers alike will be mesmerized by this searing view into the revered doctor’s heart—with a haunting conclusion that will secure Dry Ice’s place as the most memorable of White’s novels.
