Start of a Delightful New Series from Historical Romance Author Jen Turano. Miss Permilia Griswold may have been given the opportunity of a debut into New York high society, but no one warned her she wasn't guaranteed to "take." After spending the last six years banished to the wallflower section of the ballroom, she's finally putting her status on the fringes of society to good use by penning anonymous society gossip columns under the pseudonym "Miss Quill."Mr. Asher Rutherford has managed to maintain his status as a reputable gentleman of society despite opening his own department store. While pretending it's simply a lark to fill his time, he has quite legitimate reasons for needing to make his store the most successful in the country. When Permilia overhears a threat against the estimable Mr. Rutherford, she's determined to find and warn the man. Disgruntled at a first meeting that goes quite poorly and results in Asher not believing her, she decides to take matters into her own hands, never realizing she'll end up at risk as well. As Asher and Permilia are forced to work together and spend time away from the spotlight of society, perhaps there's more going on behind the scenes than they ever could have anticipated. . . .… (more)

While this is Christian fiiction it's not preachy.Christianity is part of the character and feels quite natural for her to consult with her pastor on issues she has.
Miss Permilla Griswold is the daughter of a miner and spent most of her youth with him. When she's older he marries a woman with a daughter of a similar age and connections to New York Soceity, however much she would like to be. she doesn't want to change herself a lot to fit in. She uses her wallflower status to pen a society gossip collumn under the name Miss Quill. This all changes when one of the Vanderbilts invites journalists to her ball who tell more than she ever did. She didn't want to embarass people and these people don't care.
While there and trying to help a friend and fellow wallflower escape trouble she overhears a plot to assassinate the rather interesting Asher Rutherford, of course, when she tells him this he doesn't believe her so she decides to save him, with a little help from her friends. There are also some Pinkertons involved and some stress from her step-mother. There are lots of shenanigans and honestly it was a fun read.
I found it a fun read with interesting characters and I'm curious about her friends. ( )

Author Jen Turano long ago created her own genre. Her stories are always a reader's treat: the characters are captivating, the story lines are involving, and her writing is always infused throughout with delicious wit and abiding faith. "Behind the Scenes", Book One in the "Apart From the Crowd"series, is set in the societal whirl and world of New York City in the late 1800's. While Miss Permilia Griswold appears to onlookers to be a languishing wallflower, she is actually "Miss Quill", the mysterious gossip columnist with an insider's eye view of the whims and peccadilloes of the city's elite citizens. An overheard conversation leaves Permilia with knowledge of a threat against Mr. Asher Rutherford, a department store owner and a businessman on the rise. Convincing Mr. Rutherford that he is in danger is no easy task, and Permilia feels compelled to act upon her own resolve. Circumstances bring Permilia and Asher together, and admiration and unexpected attraction grows between them, but it will take faith and fortitude to see their way to a possible lifetime of lasting love. Once you read one story by Jen Turano, you will just have to read them all. Highly recommended.

Maybe it's just my mood but I found this story to be a little too silly and not as funny as I've come to expect from the author. ( )

With all the great qualities I now expected from one of Jen Turano’s novels, Behind the Scenes tells the story of a society wallflower determined to save the day. Mystery, suspense, and romance amidst plenty of quirky circumstances and humorous dialogue fill the pages of Permilia Griswold's high-society, life-saving adventure. It’s highly entertaining and fun at every twist and turn, and I couldn't help enjoying Behind the Scenes. Any fan of Jen Turano will not want to miss this Apart From the Crowd novel. I recommend it.

Thanks to Celebrate Lit, I received a complimentary copy of Behind the Scenes and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own. ( )

Behind the Scenes shimmers with Turano's characteristic blend of warmth, wit, romance, and faith. However, what really makes the story sparkle is how she brings the magic and opulence of 1880s New York City to life. The entertaining depictions of the Vanderbilt ball and beloved Manhattan landmarks allow the reader to, much like one of the "wallflowers" in the story, sit on the outskirts of another world and observe it with amused curiosity.
