My reactions to reading this book in 1990. Spoilers follow.

This is a reworking of two John Chrisitan Falkenberg stories -- published, as most were, in the mid and early seventies -- not included in West of Honor or The Mercenary. They fill in the gaps in Falkenberg's history from his incurring the wrath of Grand Senator Bronson in West of Honor to his early and later years as a mercenary in The Mercenary. This fixup details Falkenberg's actions on the prison planet Tanith and takes place between the last two stories of The Mercenary. I don't know how much was changed for this "substantially different" version, but it's interesting to note what's in here.

This book makes much more substantial use of computers in its plot than any of the other Falkenberg books. This probably reflects Pournelle's knowledge of the subject and its military application.

This novel probably comes the closest to actually explaining (but still not really doing so) CoDominium Grand Admiral Sergei Lermontov's plan that is mercenary Falkenberg's real cause. It seems to be a plan for, first, keeping the human presence in space as vigorous as possible, and, second, to form the nucleus of a second political organization, with Sparta as the core, that can fill the vacuum of the crumbling CoDominium. (Falkenberg's actions on New Washington in The Mercenary seem designed to keep anyone else from forming an Empire in the CoDominium's absence.)

It's interesting to note that the idea of preserving civilization in the wake of a crumbling empire and setting up the basis for a new one sounds very much like Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, a work that influenced Pournelle tremendously, including his choice of academic studies. This book has, I suspect, the most clear statement of what Pournelle views as good government -- all the while acknowledging none is perfect -- in the complex constitution of Sparta which combines a heriditary monarchy. Specifically, there are two with mutual veto power over each other like Roman consuls. The influence of Roman history and culture permeates this book throughout from references to Cannae to citing the drawing up of the Twelve Tablets of Roman law as the greatest moment in the history of freedom to the layout of the Legion's camp which is like a Roman army camp to Falkenberge's boyhood in Rome.

As a story, this tale was exciting enough. The book went into the nuts and bolts of how a mercenary outfit would operate, and Tanith was a plausible explanation of how and why a slavery system could develop. I liked, though it was predictable, Major Barton rejoining Falkenberg's legion. I liked Prince Lysander of Sparta not getting the girl (one of those duty over desire things). The action was exciting and instructive on how military opeartions are thought through and conducted. The only annoying thing about this book was its two instances of flashback/fill ins; when we found out how Mark Fuller came to Tanith and how Lieutenant Owensford first met Major Barton. ( )

Further exploits of Falkenberg's Legion. This book is set interspersed with the prior The Mercenary in the CoDominium /Mote in God's Eye universe. The opening parts of the Mercenary happen before the events told here, but the Mercenary concludes after these events. Whilst there are some references made, I think this book would be perfectly readable on it's own. Only Falkenberg himself has any continuity.

Falkenberg's Mercenary unit are on Talith, a slave/prison planet where re indentured and rejects from earth are sent ot grow drugs, the harvest going back to Earth to keep the middle classes happy, and the profits going to the CoDominium Fleet. Naturally vast quantities of money attract alternative businesses, and when a sizable number of planters fail to turn their crops in to the official route, Falkeneber is hired to persude them to comply. The Rebels have of course also paid their own mercenary unit, some members of which were once in Falkenbergs...

The otherwise short story of the fight is intersperced with a few more personal tales from some of the members. An ex-rebel is captured and his piloting skills come in handy. The Prince of the title, comes from another Colony, Sparta, and is looking to offer Falkenberg a contract. There are a few hints that there is a greater plan in place which will provide continuitity across the series.

Other than that it's just a bit of ordinary mil-SF. We came we saw we shot we conquered. PLus falkenberg gets to discourse a bit about political theory but that is barely two pages worth across the book. It's readable enough, but nothing special. ( )

Book description
    PARTNERS IN OPPRESSION

For a century the Americans and Soviets had maintained an uneasy alliance based on the CoDominium, a world order in which no other power or combination of powers could threaten their mutual hegemony. Thus did the Americans and Russians learn to live at peace with one another.

But nothing lasts forever; the CoDominum's energies are nearly spent, and internal conflicts are ripping it apart. the future belongs to colony worlds like Sparta - if they can survive the death-throes of Earth's civilization.

to do that they will need men who understand the art of war, men like mercenary commander John Christian Falkenberg, and Lysander, Prince of Sparta - the first Prince of Mercenaries.

    WELCOME TO TANITH, CITIZEN

"Mark, look out!" Juanita cried.

A porker dashed forward, screaming a sound that could never have come from an Earthly pig.

Mark replied with an animal scream of pure fury. He slid in the mud but kept his feet and charged forward, screaming again as he stabbed with his spear and felt it slip into the thick hide. the porker shoved against him, and Mark fell into the mud. He desperately held the spear, but the beast walked steadily forward. the point went through the hide on the back, and came out again, the shaft sliding between meat and skin, and the impaled animal advanced inexorably up the shaft. the tusks neared his manhood. Mark heard himself whimper in fear. "I can't hold him!" He shouted. "Run!"

She didn't run. She got to her feet and shoved her spear down the snarling throat, then thrust forward, forcing the head toward the mud. Mark scrambled to his feet. His hands slipped but he thrust again and again and again, stabbing in an insane furey and shouting "Die, die, die!"
