It was 1943 in San Diego. Rationing was still new. Smuggling is something much older.

A private eye's load of copper is stolen in a highway robbery. He wants to find out what happened, and who is behind the robbery. He soon gets in a slipper slope of corporations, spies, and the army.

This book is a noir detective novel, but it is quite bland and boring. It's mostly narration, which is fine, but there is zero emotion from any of the characters. The mystery itself was interesting, but not well told. ( )

This a competently written mystery set in the American Southwest during World War II. Although not fast-paced, it is very good in describing the details of Home front life. I enjoyed it. ( )
