Very easy read but for more mature audiences. Cant wait to start reading the sequal glass. This book is about a 15 year old girl named Kristina. She changed her name to one that she thinks is more dangerous, Brea. She gets involved with a boy Adam that she meets over summer break when she goes to visit her father, a druggy. Adam soon introduces her to crank. Brea comes ack to her moms still addicted to crank. . She goes into a down spiral of addiction, to the point where she is so addicted that she will do anything to get her drug. this book is 544 pages long, but again, a extremley easy read. It's a really good book and if you like stuff about a person's life going bad and drugs, then you should definitely read it. Everyone told me it was an awesome boko and taht I would love it, and I did. AHS/KN Crank is a book about a teenage girl who has never lived with her father, untill one summer when she goes to spend time with him. Her father is not the greatest guy in the world, he has a durg and drinking problem. But,when Bree/Kristina finds love in a new guy that lives down from her father she also finds love in a new drug. Kristina gets addicted to this drug and when she returns home, with no love and this new drug all she can do is try and find love in a new guy and get her drugs. As Kristina goes down with the drugs, her life changes drastically in just a short time and she finds herself making a big choice. Crank is a great book, it really shows you what drugs can do to your life. Its a quick read that is writen in verse(poetry) and is an awesome book to read. I love this book and i think people should read this because it tells a story about a girl and her evil side. One with good grades and the other who likes to flirt with boys and get high Great cautionary tale about drugs. Honor student makes bad choices, leading to worse choices and rock bottom. I read this book because I fell in love with Ellen hopkins novels the first time i picked one up. This on was also amazing i would recomend it to anyone. Its about drugs and sex and wanting to rebell at the end of this one she gets off the drugs. Her drug of choice was crank Or Meth but she learns several ways to get high off this drug she disapoints her parents then she gets pregnate and quites the drugs. its amazing what people put themselves through they think that they cant ever get addicted to one thing but they can. she out her self through alot of danger doing drugs and all that. then while on the drug she got raped. her and her bf chase are very helpful to each other and they really care for each other. chase tells bree that he is going to be going to usc. she doesnt like this to much but then she finds out that she is preganant. and the baby isnt chases its brendans the guy who raped her. chase doesnt care and wants to help her out but he still goes to usc. This book was weird, but in an awesome sorta way! It wasn't the best book, in my opinion, that Ellen Hopkins has wrote, but it was still pretty awesome! I liked part of the ending, like the concept, but the way that Ellen Hopkins portrayed the idea was too......happy! Like all through the story Bree/Kristina's been struggling with Crank, and then the ending's all "happily ever after"! :P This is a very suspensful free verse poem based on the life of Kristina, or "Bre." Tje book is about the interesting subjects of drug use, sex, and not knowing yourself. Bre, a drugee, strives to find Kristina inside of herself and become the girl that she used to be. At the end of the story she has to make one of the most important decisions of her life. Which one will she choose? You have to read and find out. This story is about a girl named Kristina who goes and visits her father for part of her summer. She ends up meeting this guy who introduces her to "the monster" and also introduces her to a new part of herself; Bree. The book is told in free verse. Title: Crank Author: Ellen Hopkins Publisher: Simon Pulse Number Of Pages: 537 Publication Date: October 5th, 2004 Synopsis from back of book: Life was good before I met the monster After, life was great At least for a little while. Kristina is the perfect daughter: gifted high school junior, quiet, never any trouble. Then she meets the monster: crank. And what begins as a wild ride turns into a struggle for her mind, her soul—her life. Review: Crank was one of the most horrifying, heartbreaking books I have ever read. But, it was totally and completely amazing. It took me only a few hours to finish it, and even though I wanted to put it down because it was so terribly true (which scared me.) but, it captured my attention and I just couldn’t put it down. Ellen takes you on a ride you will never forget, and shows you the reasons why you never want to do drugs. Kristina/Bree, is captured in Crank’s clutches and becomes an addict, and I so badly wanted to tell her through the whole book, that she is being an idiot for doing Crank. (Hehehe.) Ellen, states at the beginning of the book how this story is based on her daughter Kristina’s experience with Crank, and she was able to depict her daughter so well. Overall, Ellen has true talent and I look forward to reading the rest of her books. I recommend this book if you like prose novels, Ellen Hopkin’s other books, and young adult novels. Crank is a story that is based on real events, that happened to author Ellen Hopkins. Kristina Snow is every one’s idea of the stereotypical daughter, however on a trip to see her deadbeat father she begins to get involved with “the monster,” and her life begins to spiral out of control. Crank is an incredible story not just about addiction, but also what it does to you and your family. The story is told in verse which makes it even more amazing. Ellen Hopkins captures such real emotions on paper, you would think that this is happening in your very own household. In my opinion every young teen should read that story of Kristina, so they really get a feel at what addiction does to you. I do have to say one thing that really struck me, was when her, her father, and her “boyfriend” were all doing it together. I can’t imagine a father letting his daughter do that in front of him never mind doing it together. It will really show how lucky some people are to have parents that are incredibly strict. Parents that are loose and try to “party” with you are just causing harm to kids and they don’t even realize it. Crank is a great read, and you’ll be glad once have listened to her story. I love the way it’s written in verse, and it makes it even more unique. Also the cover art is really cool looking, but so are most of Ellen Hopkins’s books. (Book is verse HS) This is a brilliantly conceived, heartbreaking book. It is presented in verse, allowing the narrator to focus on only the most emotionally charged events and allowing the reader to feel a bit in a drug-like haze, since we are not given a lot of exposition. Kristina’s story feels entirely believable. Through the verse, her perspective and choices also feel understandable—and all the more disturbing. This book would be appropriate for either girls or boys who like raw, realistic stories. Very deep book about a difficult life, and a young adult with a crank addiction. Little difficult to follow in places due to the poetry style writing, but altogether very entertaining read. Basic Reason for Beginning: Actually, I forgot why I wanted to read this. I read about it somewhere and it sounded interesting. Chiefly the structure. Basic Reason for Finishing: It may be a large page-count, but it's not very long. Also, the story is good and you wouldn't really expect the structure to work this well until you've read it. Texture: It's a bit like a yoyo, going up and down. Mostly Kristina/Bree's voice is like a greyhound's fur. Smooth, warm, but rough rubbed the wrong way. Full review here. Book Rereadability: The structure lends itself to rereading brilliantly. Some passages are written in such a way as to give you multiple ways of reading them, which will influence how you view the 'chapter' as a whole. Author Rereadability: I'd definitely read more of Hopkins' poetic works. It takes a lot to get me to like free verse as so many people make it read like little more than random enter-key hits. Hopkins' work isn't like that. It works. I couldn't imagine reading this book any other way. Recommendation: I think... If you like books like Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, or books that deal with teen problems anyway, this is a good best. Not a safe bet, but a good one. If you're interested in poetry, I'd strongly recommend trying Crank. It's a delight to puzzle over the structure. This is a hard book to read. To think that there are so many people out there who are addicted to this drug. The story pulls you in but you want to set it down and wish that she could stop. This is only one story of how Crank ruined a person life imagin how many more. Crank by Ellen Hopkins is the first in a trilogy about a teenager's addiction to Crystal Meth, or Crank. The entire book is written in verse form, each page a different format of verse. This ironically addictive format gives the writer a limited amount of words to convey the storyline as well as the emotions associated within it, which makes it all the more poignant. Kristina was a blond, straight-laced, high school student who spent part of a summer visiting her father. During that visit she learns her father is not the prince she always thought he was, and she forays into a world of drugs and falls in love. It is during that visit that her alternate personality, Bree, is born. Upon returning to Reno, where she lives with her mom, stepdad, brother, and sister, she finds she is addicted to "the monster" and will go to surprising depths to get her fix. The rest of the book chronicles her descent and the consequences that occur. This book was so interesting and I'm surprised that I'm only recently hearing about the series, as this book was published 5 years ago. As I mentioned above, the story and format made it addictive to me, as a reader. Many books have been written about addictions and drug use to the point that a large majority are unoriginal or repetetive in their tellings. This unique book made the often-told story interesting as well as the emotions experienced by the main character. I look forward to reading the next in the series! Synopsis: In Crank, Ellen Hopkins chronicles the turbulent and often disturbing relationship between Kristina, a character based on her own daughter, and the "monster," the highly addictive drug crystal meth, or "crank." Kristina is introduced to the drug while visiting her largely absent and ne'er-do-well father. While under the influence of the monster, Kristina discovers her sexy alter-ego, Bree: "there is no perfect daughter, / no gifted high school junior, / no Kristina Georgia Snow. / There is only Bree." Bree will do all the things good girl Kristina won't, including attracting the attention of dangerous boys who can provide her with a steady flow of crank. Soon, her grades plummet, her relationships with family and friends deteriorate, and she needs more and more of the monster just to get through the day. Kristina hits her lowest point when she is raped by one of her drug dealers and becomes pregnant as a result. Her decision to keep the baby slows her drug use, but doesn't stop it, and the author leaves the reader with the distinct impression that Kristina/Bree may never be free from her addiction. I don't know way i was drawn to this book, it was ok, not great. I don't really read books like Crank. But i gave it a try. I guess i was drawn to the way it was written and Kristina's struggle to be someone different, which came from the "monster/crank". She got so lost, while i was reading it, it just kept on kristina's struggle, there was never any spark of "something goods gonna happen". I was rooting for her, hoping for something good to happen.it was so intense, it made me think.... I'll definitely continue Ellen Hopkins books. In Crank, you get to follow Kristina's adventure from when she starts using meth to when she has become so addicted, she would do anything for it. You feel sorry for her and angry at her all at the same time because you know that she is throwing away an amazing life and that meth isn't work all the hassle she goes through. By the end, you either just feel sorry for her because she is pregnant and has no love, or your pissed at her because she is still oh so addicted. I loved this horrific novel and recommend to anyone who has a friend or family member that does any drugs so they can get a look into their world. crank was the first book by ellen hopkins that i read. i really liked this book. i think the story line of this book is good. its like a typical story about a teen getting into drugs and boys. but i liked how this girl goes by 2 different names like she really is 2 different people. Kristina Georgia Snow is the perfect daughter: gifted high school junior, quiet, never any trouble. But on a trip to visit her absentee father, Kristina disappears and Bree takes her place. Bree is the exact opposite of Kristina--she's fearless. But through a boy, Bree meets the monster: crank. This book was amazing. I would recomend it to anyone. It draws you into the story to the point where you dont want to put it down. The fact that it actually happened to her daughter makes it that much more intresting. I can not wait to read glass! 5 The book was extremely effective for the Teen Problem Book project. 5 The book was excellent. I enjoyed it. Yes, use this book. it is great for this project and has many problems to choose from. it is intense and it reads very quickly. i highly recommend this book. it has many things a person shouldn't do, so it teaches great life lessons. The prose writing style kept my attention and the descriptive elements as the main character slips more and more into drug abuse, are amazing... |
