This has been a favorite reference for years - when I want to know more about a place or word in the Bible. Having grown fond of Smith's Bible Dictionary, I now continue to use an electronic version that is available in the Pocket Sword app. ( )

Smith's Bible dictionary is an old warhorse, but good for a couple of reasons. Becasue it was written (and revised) before the twentieth century, it treats biblical matters in light of the Bible only, and not new fangled archaeological theories or new chronologies or new textual theories. This allows you to study not only with the light of modern findings, but the lack of modern findings. Make sense? ( )
