My love for the musical is keeping me from giving this a lower rating. Not the best book but also not the worst. ( )

I really enjoyed the first half of this book: an engaging, detailed character study of two fully-realized individuals. The writing was poetic and straightforward. In the second half of the book, the writing lost some of its charm. What was poetic became schmaltzy and overwrought, and I couldn't help but feel frustrated with the characters' choices. Quick read. Not my usual read, but if approached with a clear and open mind, be prepared to be pulled into the story. Mr. Waller's ability to take the reader through a story we have since we were raised watching classic movies, his prose provides a new account, and our memories add traditional mental images from our youthful experience. Had seen the movie years ago after not thinking I would want to but really enjoyed it. When I saw this book for sale at Mercy for $.50 how could I pass it up? I did enjoy the book but can't compare to the movie as I don't remember the details of it very well. I did cry during both and would definitely recommend this book. I think many of us can relate to Francesca. We love our families- kids and spouses- but things don't always turn out the way we dream they will. Doesn't mean it is bad just not great all the time. Looking at other people's reviews of it this seems to be a polarising book, as is often the case with works that become a "must read" as this did.
I read it because it was a favourite book of a friend who passed away a while ago, and I'm glad I did. I felt it went on too long, that the final 2 chapters tipped it over the edge into the "laying it on really thick" zone, but until then I found it moving, romantic and readable.
It's full of clichés and sentimentality, but it works. ( )

First words
There are songs that come free from the blue-eyed grass, from the dust of a thousand country roads. This is one of them.
Quotations
In a universe of ambiguity, this kind of certainty comes only once, and never again, no matter how many lifetimes you live.
In an increasingly callous world, we all exist with our own carapaces of scabbed-over sensibilities. Where great passion leaves off and mawkishness begins, I'm not sure. But our tendency to scoff at the possibility of the former and to label genuine and profound feelings as maudlin makes it difficult to enter the realm of gentleness required to understand the story of Francesca Johnson and Robert Kincaid....

If, however, you approach what follows with a willing suspension of disbelief, as Coleridge put it, I am confident you will experience what I have experienced. In the indifferent spaces of your heart, you may even find, as Francesca Johnson did, room to dance again.
Complex things are easy to do. Simplicity's the real challenge.
