El último expediente llegado al escritorio de Kristóf Kömives, juez en la Budapest de entreguerras, es el divorcio de los Greiner. Un caso más, excepto que el nombre de soltera de la mujer, Anna Fazekas, hace perder al magistrado su inmutable serenidad. El alegre desparpajo de la juventud, un paseo por el lago, una mirada arrebatadora: la evocación de aquellos instantes fugaces basta para perturbar, tantos años después, el sosiego de su intachable vida burguesa. Y cuando el señor Greiner se presenta en su casa con la noticia de la muerte de su mujer, Kristóf no puede contener el aluvión de sentimientos encontrados que inundan su espíritu. ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Through extensive monologues by his characters, Sandor Marai once again plunges into the emptiness and loneliness of the human soul, confronting it with an increasingly modernizing society which makes European bourgeois classes face an uncomfortable path.   The latest file to reach the desk of Kristof Komives, a judge in the interwar Budapest, is the Greiner divorce. This would be just another case, except for the woman's maiden name, Anna Fazekas, makes the judge lose his immutable serenity. The joyous self-confidence being young, a walk by the lake, a captivating gaze: the recollection of those fleeting moments is enough to disturb the tranquility of his unblemished bourgeois life so many years later. And when Mr. Greiner shows up at his house with the news of his wife's death, Kristof cannot contain the barrage of mixed feelings that overcome him.   During the course of one night, Kristof will assume both the role of the accused and the witness to Greiner's confession, which, by unraveling the history of their marriage, will reveal the abyss that separates the two men: on one hand, the bourgeois who resigned from any emotions of the unknown to preserve the solid values of a stable and self-indulgent social class, and on the other, the young newcomer who, to conquer a forbidden love, gave himself up to a life erected on a façade and strictly confined in standards that were alien to him.… (more)

What could be going on in a person's head? Komives, the main character in this book, thinks a lot, decides a lot - for others - and has an incredible nostalgia for "how it was" and at the same time sees that all kinds of things are coming that will turn everything upside down. will destroy.
The writer lets us walk into a complete human life, just in that one night, and sometimes you can feel sorry for 'Mr. Judge', at other times you would like to urge him to open his mouth, open his heart for real. to vent, to say what he thinks, and to let go of his stiffness.
Marai is a master storyteller, takes you to the time between two world wars where people think and of course hope that everything will remain as it is at that moment in history, but somewhere they feel that this is not yet all the misery they have experienced. And then, suddenly, halfway the book something happens that you didn't see coming at all...
The fact that feelings are ultimately exposed is a reward for our patient reading and empathy. It is a drama for the main character. The question for the reader is: "who is the main character?" ( )
