In my opinion, this is a very cute and humorous book that young readers will enjoy. It is a story about a hungry Billy goat that eats everything in sight, including several articles of clothing owned by a young boy. The language is very patterned and clear. Rhyming couplets occur on almost every page; for example, the book reads, “But when he felt better, he ate my sweater.” The writing is organized, paced very well, and flows nicely. There are very small amounts of text written on each page, which is beneficial for a young child learning to read. The writing is also predictable; each page the Billy goat eats a new piece of clothing. For example, the story reads, “But he ate my hat, and then he ate my scarf.” This predictable writing is also helpful for a young reader to comprehend. Although this is an old book, the illustrations are still very detailed and colorful. I like the small size of this book because it is a good size for children’s small hands. The characters and plot are not well developed, but the story is still humorous because the goat continues to eat everything and the boy does not know what to do. Eventually, the boy thinks the goat will eat him so he stays away from all hungry Billy goats. There is no central message to this story; it is simply a cute story of a goat read for enjoyment. ( )
