Clara has recently returned home after giving birth to her second child, Felix. She has asked her husband, Nick, to pick up Chinese food for dinner after he picks up their daughter, Maisie. When Nick doesn’t arrive home in a reasonable timeframe, Clara starts to worry. Her life is totally upended when she learns that Nick has been in a car accident and has died…with Maisie in the car, who is unharmed.
Clara cannot believe that Nick’s accident was his fault, which is what the police have told her – that he was going too fast. Then, Maisie starts having nightmares about the “bad man” in the black car and Clara starts wondering if Nick was murdered. She decides to start investigating and discovers that Nick had a lot of secrets. Along with dealing with the loss of her husband, Clara also has other family issues; her mom who has Alzheimer’s and her dad – who cares for her mom with the help of an aide – is struggling to cope as well.
The narration alternates between Clara in the present tense and Nick relating the weeks leading up to his death including all the events he kept secret from Clara and this works well. ( )

Life can change in an instant. That is exactly what happens to Clara Solberg. Sleep-deprived and cranky, she has an impatient and careless conversation with her husband, not realizing it will be the last time she speaks to him. Nick dies in a senseless accident, but things don't add up and Clara suspects there is more to the crash then meets the eye.
The book is told from two points of view, Nick's unraveling life before the accidents, and Clara's shell-shocked reaction to the disturbing evidence coming to light. Fast-paced with a twisty path, Every last Lie will have a reader questioning everyone in Clara and Nick's orbit, wondering who was responsible for the destruction of their picture-perfect world.

I've enjoyed every single book of Mary's, and this one is no exception. I think what really did it for me was remembering what it was like right after having a baby...the exhaustion, the foggy brain, the roller coaster emotions. Clara is dealing with all of that when her husband, Nick, is suddenly killed.

A husband she loved, trusted, and believed, only to uncover layer upon layer of lies and deceit. Or are they? Clara's mind is running overtime for answers as to what REALLY happened in her husband's death. And her POV takes the reader on a many-level-emotional search for the truth.

We also have Nick's POV of the events in months leading up to the accident. These characters, as in real life, have parts we admire about them, and parts that make you want to turn against them. Mary keeps the reader guessing right up until the end as to what happened, who was involved, and how Clara will move on with her life. Another good MK read! ( )

Mary Kubica might be my favorite author. She’s the master of psychological suspense and I’m like a little fanboy waiting for her next book to come out. But back to this book.

A woman’s husband dies in a car wreck. But it’s not what it seems. Or is it? The tension between Clara’s post-crash grief and Nick’s pre-crash stress is brought to the forefront by the dueling narrators: Robins and Hamilton (I love to listen to Kubica's work on audio.) Don’t start this one unless you’re prepared to spend a day finishing it!

PS: This book inspired me to write my own psychological thriller, FALSE SUMMIT, releasing on Oct 5, 2023. I'm planning on asking Mary for a blurb...fingers are crossed! ( )
