Another "potboiler" from Clarke, who has a talent for anticipating public interest in subjects such as "Titanic" and giant asteroids. This one is about a race between two corporations to raise and preserve the Titanic. Sounds simple, but Clarke always has surprises up his sleeve. I can imagine his gleeful chuckle as he came up with some of the ones in this book. I did not have high expectations for this one - but reading that Clarke-ian voice - cool, dispassionate, reasonable - was like hearing from an old friend, someone whom you had forgotten just how much you enjoy their company. It's a good thing one doesn't expect character studies from Sir Arthur, because there certainly are none here. He travels well-trodden (and acknowledged!) ground here. One of the characters even mentions Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt story Raise the Titanic!. The story is about competing technological methods to raise the famous ship on the centennial of its sinking. It has a twist at the end, but all in all, unless you're a compulsive Clarke fan, you can skip this one. no reviews | add a review

Before it became cool, or even achievable Clarke came up with this. The story is basically what you would expect, except that rather than the story of a mission to do just that, it is the story of competing missions to salvage the wreck, to see who can be ready and get it done first.
Clarke fans should still like it, but if the Titanic holds no interest, pretty avoidable.
