The Children of Hurin by J. R. R. Tolkien. In my TBR pile

#150 The Children of Hurin - J R R Tolkien This book is hard going. Compare the writing here with Tolkien's masterpiece "The Lord of the Rings" or with his wonderfully accessible "The Hobbit" and you will be very disappointed. This is not surprising as this is not a book Tolkien published. Inst ...

I must admit I haven't even bothered getting Children of Hurin as it came out when I had cut back on my purchases and when I did investigate it I read some reviews which suggested that it was a hard read comparing it to Silmarillion and The History of the Middle Earth. I have bought The Legend ...

LizT in The Green Dragon : JRRT's Birthday! (Jan 5, 2009, 10:37am)

Happy Birthday JRRT! *raises, erm, a nice cup of tea in toast* :-) And as a side note, now I feel the need to go read The Children of Hurin. Gah!

Happy Birthday Professor! Definitely a birthday to be thankful for. Lucky Groo to be reading The Children of Hurin for the first time. It's wonderful.

128) The Children of Húrin by JRR Tolkien I got this for my dad for his birthday, and he let me borrow it when he was done. It's a bit over-hyped, really. Not bad, but not great either.

I'd like to add a small note to the alliterative verse discussion we had earlier. I've just finished reading Tolkien's The Children of Hurin, and found out in the appendix that Tolkien had also a poem version of the tale, written in alliterative verse, and a small part is cited there: ...they ...

I have recently finished Children of Hurin. It needs another read, The Alan Lee illustrations give the book a sort of cold, sad feel. In fact the story is dark. I still couldn't put it down. I love Tolkein and I thought this really showed how many of his ideas for The Lord of the Rings ...

Decided to read the entire Lord of the Rings series, including The Hobbit and The Children of Hurin. Finished The Hobbit and have read half of The Fellowship of the Ring.

Sorry, I kinda missed the point of the first post. The answer is yes, The Children of Hurin can be read as a standalone story. The preface recaps the story of Hurin, which isn't really necessary as the book is about his son, Turin, and starts with him as a young child.

I've read The Children of Hurin and can say it's worth the read. It's an expanded, novelized version of "Of Turin Turambar" from The Silmarillion. This may sound odd but one way to approach this is to read The Silmarillion up to "Of Turin", read "Children of Hurin" in its place, then ...

JPB in The Green Dragon : Children of Hurin (Nov 12, 2007, 8:41am)

Brett - You may never read The Children of Hurin if you read The Silmarillion first. The former is far more accessible than the latter.

I just picked up The Children of Hurin from my college bookstore. I've read the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and loved them. I want to start reading this but I have one question for y'all. Is this part of a series or can I read it without reading anything else?

The Discworld books are great. Terry Pratchett is one of my favorite authors. I have The Children of Hurin in my to be read pile, also. I kept dithering whether to buy it or not and ended up getting it on Bookins. I haven't read any of John Dunning's books but I had heard that ...

I was pretty excited to read The Children of Hurin but it took a while because I was in the middle of another book (Life of Pi) and because I had pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition and so had to wait for it. Right now I'm reading The Children of Hurin which I'm enjoying tremendously. It's making me want to revisit The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales but they will have to wait as I'm travelling soon and need more portable books. So I'm taking Birdsong and Love in The Time of Cholera, both ...

I like Arwen too, there's also Morwen from The Children of Hurin? I'm only about half way through the story, but she seems a pretty strong, proud, determined woman (so far). This is a very cool idea, picking a name from a book.

... The Time Traveler's Wife, so I'd be happy to participate in a discussion of either. I had a look to see if I could get Children of Hurin sometime soon from a library around here, no luck, so I'll be out for that for sure.

I would be willing to do His Majesty's Dragon or Children of Hurin (though because it's unavailable in PB will reduce those willing a lot) I have a copy of Good Omen' sitting on my shelf near the top of my TBR so that one would definately get my vote.

Pass on Children of Hurin for me. Sorry. It's not that I have anything against Tolkien, it's just his books always require a big commitment from me, and I can't between working full time and school part time. However, I am reading His Majesty's Dragon right now, and I LOVE it. Not in the ...

I'd like to do Children of Hurin, but it seems to be sold out for now, so I would have to beg, borrow or steal one. I'm not going to do any other fantasy reads right now, I'm committed to several other reads and fantasy isn't my favorite genre.

... diverse. That said, I'm not really into reading the sequel to American Gods, Anansi Boys, right now. And I'll pass on The Children of Hurin. The other ideas sound good though.

I'd only join Children of hurin in paperback, I just don't have room for any hardbacks... I'd second Contact as it's a great book, though it is fairly long for a group read. There are lots of philosophical issues that can be raised in the discussions, not just technical writing details. I ...

I'd definitely participate in a discussion of The Time Traveller's Wife. I'll join in on The Children of Hurin if I'm able to get a library copy, but it's not something I'd consider buying new in hardcover.

I'd also pass on Children of Hurin - I'm not a big fan of buying hardbacks, and if I'm going to struggle through Tolkien's non-LotR stuff, I should go finish Unfinished Tales. I'm putting a vote in for the Temeraire series... I already have a copy of His Majesty's Dragon sitting on top of ...

I'm happy to group read Children of Hurin, though if something else comes up, then I'll be happy with that too (Temeraire is my choice to throw into the hat)... and that, ladies and gentlemen, is how to sit on the fence ;-)

I think Children of Hurin would be nice but I plan to wait 'til the paperback so I'm out if this is the next read... Good luck with the oija board, Groo!

I'm up for Children of Hurin, but I gotta finish For a Few Demons More, first. Oi...plus I gotta read up on some rpg stuff, since my group is going to start Deadlands soon.

We've discussed Children of Hurin as a group read, and I'm all for that. Anyone else? Bah, wonky touchstones...

#64 - the bits you've read in SIlmarillion and lost tales were JRR, everything else is Christopher tolkein. Children of Hurin is CTs first attempt at writing an actual novel. He has filled in all the details without editorial comment, in his father's style. Apparently it is pretty good (s ...

I'd be interested in reading Children of Hurin at some point, but I can't buy it in hardcover since I don't have the money, so I'd have to find it at the library, which in my current situation is a bit unlikely. So if we do this soon, I probably won't be able to participate. I did just read T ...

I'm kind of afraid to venture anywhere near a bookstore right now, because I know if I do, I'll leave with not only Children of Hurin, but the complete works of Christopher Moore, Brandon Sanderson, and Jasper Fforde as well, and I'm reallyreallyreally trying to save money!!!

#63 Am I missing something here? What percentage of Children of Hurin is Tolkien, and what percentage "other"? Or are you talking Magic Balls of Thorglopf, which I can assure you was all written by I.P. Knightly (best known for his Rusty Bedsprings series).

I might be up for Children of Hurin, but only if my library has it processed by then and I'm able to get my hands on a copy. I wouldn't buy it, since new hardcovers cost WAY too much here and it'd be difficult, (if not impossible), to find used.

Children of Hurin I would read with this group, might even convince me to buy it. :) I've been on the edge trying to think of an excuse. I was sort of looking forward to that trilogy though.

... and I'm always amazed with how they managed to squeeze just one more gem out of this fantastic world. Oh, and Children of Hurin must surely be a GD group read, you're right.

I was thinking about this, mostly because of Children of Hurin. Which do you prefer? The imagine-it-yourself way C.S. Lewis writes fiction or the details J.R.R. Tolkien shares?

Hey, I liked Magic Balls of Thorglop, especially Book 2: The ChafeSong of Thorglop! Still Children of Hurin would be an appropriate group read.

I do think Children of Hurin should be a Green Dragon read. That's what this group is all about. Better that than some Magic Balls of Thorglopf trilogy or something like that.
