For Banks I would recommend a Culture novel as your first one. The Player Of Games is probably the most approachable although there is something to be said for starting with Consider Phlebas (it was published first).
Stross is ... ... And it's just the sort of thing NRYB might republish. Perhaps they'll get around to it soon.
Michael Tolkin's books The Player and The Return of the Player are good fun, too, but much less intense and accomplished than West's visionary work.

A friend mentioned that I might like some of Banks' "The Culture" books. I've enjoyed them so far.
... It's been a rough few months.
10. The Player of Games by Iain M. Banks.
I've never been a huge science fiction fan, but this story of a game theorist who finds himself playing an extraordinarily complex game with eerie similarities to real life was pretty interesting. Some disturbingly ... ... mix of reads! and thanks for the comments on them as we are a nosey lot.
I've read a couple of Banks (Wasp Factory, Player of Games and Against a Dark Background), my husband is a big Banks fan. He thought The Algebraist needed editing and thought it not his best work. He has the ... I'm reading my first Culture book, by Iain M. Banks, Player of Games. It's wonderful!! ... chapters in 'Mountain' (two Challenge books - Conversations at Curlow Creek;A Thousand Days in Venice; and a ring-in The Player of Games). Mann's book is far more intricate than the rest but so slow, its plot focusing on the day-to-day doings of a slightly irritating young man in an early ... ... harm you. Its a great reference.

So, do we send a rescue mission in after him? Or start a post-writing campaign to his profile page. OR, sadly, leave him ... ... It sold both in genre and out.
I would also recommend Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler (dystopian future), Player of Games by Ian M. Banks (political intrigue in highly advanced societies), Salt by Adam Roberts (contrast of two societies with different political philosophies) ... ... rest in no particular order (and excluding anything that would qualify as fantasy):
The Speed of Dark, Elizabeth Moon
Player of Games, Iain M. Banks
