This is a wonderful picture books that takes the reader on a journey to a pond. While a mother and her young son row across the top of the pond, the young boy learns about animals and insects that live both above and below the water. The reader learns the connections both have to the other. There is an author’s note at the back that tells more about these systems. There is also a page that tells the reader about four animals listed in the book. ( )

This book would be good for primary grades. This book takes the reader on a journey as it describes the creatures and environment above and below the pond's surface. It could be used as an introduction or material for a science unit. ( )

I'm a big fan of these over and under books in general -- so well done, so thoughtful, such a nice illustration of the web of life, with a well written and researched further reading area in the back. I'm delighted to see a Mom and Son of color as our happy protagonists exploring the pond together. ( )
