For short Russian fiction I woulds suggest Taras Bulba by Gogol. ... as science fiction. Kurt Vonnegut, William Gibson, Robert Louis Stevenson Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Neil Gaiman, Nicolai Gogol, Haruki Murakami - there are a lot of good or great writers who write way out there in the land of imagination, some of it more or less science-based. ... you look for, and in the Nose and the Overcoat, all the allegory you could wish for. They are surreal. Look also for Taras Bulba about cossacks.
