In Butterfly Bones Cain, the young head of the Hargreaves family, pays a visit to Lord Cromwell, a distant relation. Cromwell is friendly enough, but claims he never sent the invitation to Cain, who is soon drawn into a mystery. Cromwell's half-Japanese daughter, Lukia, has gone mad since the suicide of her mother. Cromwell and his second wife have called upon the services of an exorcist, but Cain doesn't believe in the medium's powers for a minute and quickly realizes there is something even more sinister than ghosts at work in the old castle. When he sees the scars on the arms of Lord Cromwell's young son, he is reminded of his own abusive childhood and becomes determined to save the boy and his sister.

In Bloodberry Jam a wealthy and delusional old lady convinces herself that Cain's half-sister Mary Weather is her long-lost granddaughter, Kitty.

In Lion Crest Cain finds himself identifying with a rebellious young misfit named Eliza who's arranged marriage is ended when her fiancee is found dead. There is a satisfying twist to this story and it furthers the relationship between Cain and his valet, Riff.

This series is gothic, moody and darkly beautiful. I can't wait to see where it goes in future volumes. ( )
