Loading... A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purposeby Eckhart Tolle
Honestly folks, I am not big on self-help books, and despite all my reading around the Beats, Beatniks, Bohemians and other alternative cultures of the last two centuries, I am not that easily able to swallow the direct message of tuning in, turning on and dropping out; I observe this as history, but I generally don't participate.Tolle has something though. If you get this book and you find it initially woolly, touchy-feely, obscure, superficial or trite - well, you may soon realize it's your ego trying its best to spit out the medicine it is being forced to imbibe.Tolle will soon be landing rabbit punches to your ego, delivering them in velvet gloves. Your ego will probably not get up after the count but your essential self will happily throw in the towel as far as our idiotically dog-eat-dog world is concerned, step out of the arena we have forced ourselves to maul in, and go and do something much, much more enlightened instead. ( )Reynal & Hitchcock(1939) Slow to start but incredible insights on the ego, who we truly are. Builds on The Power of Now Eckhart Tolle's latest guide to spiritual living has proved to be a phenomenal success on the usual bestseller circuit thanks partly to the Oprah Book Club seal of approval which in turn has led to the pioneering webinars that millions of people have already participated in and Christian critics and foes alike have ceremoniously bashed. The predecessor to Tolle's current chef d'oeuvre, The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment, was an instrumental tool, a guide to living one's best life right now. In fact, I eventually read Tolle's The Power of Now with glee (after picking it up half a dozen times) because it captured the inner turmoil I had long been feeling about regarding my inability or unwillingness to live mindfully, full of awareness, and always in the present. As discussed elsewhere, I have often found myself significantly melancholic about the past and always weaving dreams and tales of the future. In other words, I scarcely live in the moment. Whereas The Power of Now was difficult to infuse enthusiasm in the reader and was full of jargon, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose is remarkably easy to understand and it captures the reader's attention and imagination so thoroughly. Indeed, Tolle has cleaned up his writing and the words, ideas, and pages flow into one's mind and consciousness. It is like having a leisurely conversation with the spiritual teacher. Since childhood, I have been seeking inner peace and struggling to balance the demands of societal mores and demands against my personal values and desires. Indeed, my precocious curiousity for the unknown and the other and my existential thought processes have gradually led me to seek something more. In a world fraught with struggles to make slow and simple living more than a fad or a mantra, I think Tolle's simple and sublime teachings are echoes of our subconscious thoughts and desires. It is time we honour them and bring them alive instead of being a prisoner to our worries, paranoid thoughts, and being captive to endless noise and prattle without knowing how to be still and seeking our true selves instead of seeking them in the next relationship, the next adventure, the next job before we end up disillusioned, disappointed, and blame outside events and triggers for what is merely an imbalance of our very selves. Awakening to Your Life's Purpose One of those life changing books for me. A true inspiration................. encouraging a spiritual life An extraordinary book by a great visionary of our time. I don't like this as much as 'The Power of Now'. I find his speaking to present moment truth incredibly moving, but in this book he uses science terminology incorrectly and it just does not sit well with his main message for me. I listened to this book on my iPod. The drone of the author's voice often put me to sleep, but I think my subconscious still got it. I doubt I could have read this profound book. I learned a lot and try to feel that space of consciousness that he talks about. Portions of this book have changed my outlook on the consciousness of my own existence. I already know that the influence of this book will positively impact the remainder of my life. It would be difficult not to have heard of this book since it was probably the most heavily promoted book on the Oprah Winfrey Show of all time. It is not just "a women's book" however. Any conscientious reader who takes his/her time with it can gain valuable insights in moving forward with their lives. It is not a quick read and requires thought as one goes along, but it is a worthwhile journey and destination. It is a well written and thoughtful read. Although Tolle says he's not affiliated with any religion, this book is really "Buddhism lite". The concepts in this book weren't new to me but I thought that Tolle had an engaging style of explaining them that kept me interested. It was repetitive at times but I think someone who was learning about enlightenment and the principles of consciousness for the first time might need that repetition to reinforce them. Most of the book was theoretical - I would have like more concrete examples of how to implement the concepts in my own life. I did not do Oprah's online classes, perhaps those would have some. I found Eckhart Tolle's self help book to be very engaging. Have your handy dandy highlighter available as you note key ideas as well as a pencil to jot down your thoughts. Although I did not feel awakened to my life's purpose I learned how to be more aware, more conscience of my own perceptions and that of others. If that's to be my life's purpose than so be it, I'm well on my way. I'll keep this book near at hand to review key ideas occasionally less I lose my way. A definite keeper. not as compelling as I expected. Restating what I knew from reading Craft of the Warrior by Spencer, and many different books by Chopra. I like it so far, and like what he said about the ego. Great reading, easy to read, easy to understand, very calm reading...Makes it's point 5 stars! Uplifting and inspiring!Having Oprah Winfrey say, "Your book is my book club pick" epitomizes a leap in success. It's certainly the dream of almost every author I know. For one Canadian author it's a dream come true. Vancouver-based author and spiritual teacher [author:Eckhart Tolle] must feel like he's riding a wave. His book [book:A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose] is Oprah's 61st choice for her book club. Oprah is hugely responsible for Tolle's earlier rise in fame as she launched his 2005 book [book:The Power of Now], skyrocketing it to a million-copy bestseller. Tolle's A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose is a fantastic book for anyone who is looking for some illumination on life. Many of us want to change, yearn to better ourselves or grow to our fullest potential, yet we have no idea HOW to do this, how to find our life's purpose. We are living on 'ego', surrounded by stuff and are unconnected to who we really are inside. If you are a reader who really thinks about what you're reading, you'll find some clarity and direction in this book. I found it to be very uplifting, hopeful, thought-provoking and reaffirming. I think any book that can affect a person's thoughts or life as Eckhart's books have done deserves to be read with an open mind and heart. As in [book:The Secret], I found many similarities in the messages in this book and I wish I'd read it years ago. Tolle's writing is quietly blunt and often lyrical, and always honest, as he sees life. I recommend this book for older teens, especially those graduating and moving into the work force. It is also great for any adult, especially those looking to make changes in their lives, whether in relationships or careers. In many ways, I found it to be a philosophical study of how to 'let go' of old ways of thinking. This is a book about making every minute of your life count for something--being authentic, which reminds me also of Sarah Ban Breathnach's [book:Something More: Excavating Your Authentic Self]. I am also pleased to see that Oprah has selected another Canadian author. As a Canadian novelist myself, this brings me some hope. After all, I've discovered that one of my life's purposes is to write novels that make people think. What's your life's purpose? ~[author:Cheryl Kaye Tardif],bestselling author of [book:Whale Song], a novel that will change how you view life...and deathhttp://www.cherylktardif.com Wonderful thoughts and ideas about a view point of living your life more meaningful. Works too. Not a great writer, but ideas are wonderful I had high hopes for this book, based on accolades from reviews I'd read. Unfortunately, I found it disappointing. The writing is only fair, not what I would expect in a best-seller. The stories were not engaging enough to encourage me to WANT to read more. I recommend Jon Kabat-Zinn's "Full Catastrophe Living" instead. Tolle goes beyond his work, "The power of now," to show how a person stepping out of ego can have a beneficial effect on his community and possibly world peace. Wow |
