Silly and fun. Strikes me as a book for boys, but maybe girls love it too. ( )

The first of Andy Stanton's My Gum books - which my 5yo is just about old enough to enjoy, although she misses half the jokes. This was just as sparkly and silly and great as I hoped it would be. Starring marvellous Polly, bad man Mr Gum, rubbish hero Friday O'Leary and of course Jake, the whopper dog. ( )

Well, an interesting book. Was suggested by a parent as it was something her son was enjoying. I can see it being a hit with reluctant readers as it is offbeat and amusing. Just doesn't particularly make me laugh but maybe for a child age 7-10 years it would be a good read. ( )

Frenetic pacing.

Horrid man tries to kill dog.

Annoying--thumbs down.

Haiku summary

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0061152404, Hardcover)

Mr. Gum may be the nastiest man on Earth, but he has the tidiest, greeniest, floweriest, gardeniest garden in the world…that is, until a giant whopper of a dog named Jake destroys it in a fit of doggy joy. In retaliation, Mr. Gum hatches one of his astonishingly evil plots, involving some poisonous meat, and soon—very soon—things will get uglier than Mr. Gum in his underwear.

Unless, of course, Polly—a golden-haired local girl with hair like cat's daydream who is as good and true as Mr. Gum is wretched and smelly—can stymie Mr. Gum, save Jake, and prove to the world why the truth is lemon meringue . . .

(retrieved from Amazon Mon, 30 Sep 2013 13:37:53 -0400)

Mr Gum is a truly nasty old man. He's absolutely grim. But this book's not just about him. There's also a little girl called Polly, an evil butcher, heroes and sweets and stuff, and Jake the dog, who must be saved from terrible, terrible evil.
