Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy is another favourite.
I'm just getting into George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series and I'm really enjoying that after avoiding it ...
... anyway. Everyone talks about religion so much regarding the work by that author. (Not that I didn't read Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials .) I read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe only within the last two years, because of the movie. I'd started it when I was twelve in school but ...

The book that summons up the Oxford experience - I have to admit wallowing in nostalgia reading Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. That first chapter of Northern Lights could have taken place in Jesus SCR, or indeed any SCR (although I think Pullman modelled Jordan College ...
... his philosophy. I'm slow on picking up hidden meanings though, I think I'm pretty much a literal reader.
Maybe the His Dark Materials will be good to read after I've finished Elantris.
I adore audiobooks! It's such a (guilty) pleasure to be read to.
I agree with all those who have lauded the His Dark Materials audiobooks - they used the cast very effectively, and even though I've read the books a number of times, I felt more deeply involved in the plot as it was being read ...
I really like the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. The first book doesn't have any other worlds until the end of the book but the rest of the series has the heroine traveling through different worlds. It's a great series-one of my favorites.
The War of the Flowers by Tad Will ...
His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman
Sorry, I meant to say His Dark Materials , which is the name of the trilogy, that includes The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. In these books, the religious motivation is basically negative, but the story is well told.
I became interested in Paradise Lost because it was quoted in the His Dark Materials trilogy.
Just finished The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman yesterday. Going to start the third book in the author's His Dark Materials series, which is The Amber Spyglass
... and I'm thoroughly enjoying The Golden Compass as well. I intend to continue with the other two books in Pullman's His Dark Materials series when I'm done.
... (if they exist).
(Has someone been reading Philip Pullman? The scenario has apparently lurched in the direction of His Dark Materials !)
... library and wound up really liking... until I go back to re-read, the only purpose of owning them is for lending out (the His Dark Materials box set is the most recent example).
I'm pretty free about lending my books out... everybody gets a first chance. I have some friends I trust enough ...
... amazingly sophisticated. Does that mean I'm going to get labeled as a "children's books" author?
Take Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials . The books are long. The writing style is fairly complex. The plots are intricate and have violent scenes sometimes, and can be dark. I love them to ...
I'll second the recommendation for His Dark Materials , and add in The Bartemius Trilogy (first book: The Amulet of Samarkand) by Jonathan Stroud. If your sister's the sort that likes Jane Austen, point her towards Sorcery and Cecelia or the Enchanted Chocolate Pot by Patricia C. Wrede and Car ...
I too loved His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman.
... couple of years where I neglected reading a lot (blame online roleplaying), but I'm a little surprised no one mentioned the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. That was a milestone series for me, it made me cry at the end. I sort of see those as my model for the feel I wish my own ...
... had one book to write and just wrote it multiple times. However, I would have to disagree with your opinion of Pullman. His Dark Materials is an amasing peice of fantasy. While I disagree with his extremist Atheist views, I love this trilogy to death.
... is liable to a long project for me w/the amount of time I'm able to devote to reading, however-I managed to polish off His Dark Materials the trilogy last spring in about 6 wks. Vanye
... amusingly (to me) misunderstood the topic of this post when I saw it on my "Your books" list -- the two that came up were His Dark Materials and Sandman: Preludes and Nocturnes -- so I thought maybe it was a topic about books that have libraries in them! Snort. Another topic for another time. ...
I had an awful time getting into Golden Compass (took me at least three tries) but it definitely redeemed itself.
The one I haven't convinced myself to like is Sabriel. I had better luck with the audio version narrated by Tim Curry, but even then I only lasted until about halfway through. Som ...

Did you delete it? I could only find His Dark Materials the trilogy in your catalog and that shows up as English.
The reason I went to look is that I noticed yesterday that the language displayed for my edition under "This book" info for Déjà Dead by Kathy Reichs is Portuguese but ...

... It just came out, and it's wonderfully creative, with a whole new take on magic.
I'll also second Phillip Pullman's Dark Materials series. And also the Garth Nix series that starts with Sabriel.
Hi Circadia
Philip Pullman is great - I've read His Dark Materials Trilogy & Tiger in the Well from his Sally Lockhart series. I've yet to read the other authors you've mentioned. Have you read William Nicholson's Wind Singer, or Michelle Paver's Wolf Brother? The Amulet of S ...
... authors).
Also great are young adult and juvenile audio books (and my kids are in their 20's, so I buy these for ME): His Dark Materials by Pullman, Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke and City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau.
Despite not being a believer, the last volume of His Dark Materials is ruined for me by Pullman forgetting that he is writing a novel, and not an anti-religious tract.
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, is absolutely amazing, and would definitely accompany me, as would the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman, and Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber and Nights at the Circus.
Perhaps the Phillip Pullman His Dark Materials trilogy? They are just wonderful books.
I just took a long road trip and listened to The Golden Compass (the first in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy) -- the audio version is narrated by Pullman and a full cast of actors, and I got immensely more out of the listening than I did when I read it. If anyone out there is ...
My rather intense dislike for His Dark Materials might get in the way of my enjoyment of the audiobooks.
Also, in the audible version of Jonathan Strange, the footnotes are incorporated entirely into the text (without, say, the use of chapter markers).
... text. I don't remember whether or not they said "footnote one" at the start of the track, though.
janehyde - I LOVE the His Dark Materials audiobooks, which was astounding, because full-cast stuff normally really annoys me, but I though all of the performances for that were excellent.
Here are my favorite audiobooks. First of all, all three volumes of Pullman's His Dark Materials . He narrates in his lovely voice, and there are theatrical effects. But they are full-text. Another is Howard's End, from Recorded Books, and recently I listened to The Age of Innocence. B ...

... or at least her Dark is Rising series. The subject matter and the characters are more appealing to me than Pullman's Dark Materials , although I did enjoy that series as well.
... but it's one of the most nicely put together and unusual fantasy series I've read for ages, probably since I met His dark materials by Philip Pullman (which is practically perfect, even if it isn't Australian :-) ).
There's a nice e-comic here about the author-obsession reading ...
... To me, it would be because he is one of the finest writers of today, and I'm glad I have lived long enough to experience His Dark Materials . On the other hand, I agree with you about Cynthia Voigt. She is an extremely fine writer and one of my American all-star favorites. I think that since ...
