Characters are so real, you just want to learn more. Although dated, it still works. A great social commentary. a young womans journey to adulthood, fascinating easily read the characters come alive. a pregnant young woman rents an l-shaped apartment and becomes friends with other residents of the building. no reviews | add a review

I think it's still as enjoyable as when it first was published (I'm 25 and of course read it for the first time) because the subjects of motherhood/fear of motherhood, pregnancy, relationships, loneliness, love-seeking, friendships, jobs/losing jobs and just how it feels to move to a new place never get dated.. All these feelings are universal for everyone still in the 2000s (well perhaps the book is more for girls than boys, but I also think boys will enjoy this one as it really has got more to it than just being "the story of a single mum"-book). Of course it has a 1960s feeling, but I just find that charming and at the same time historically/socially interesting. But the fundamental story could be about any young woman's (or man's) fears and joys today as well, anywhere. Because it's about dealing with life and love, and that everyday struggle.. It's nice to know you're not alone.
This book is just so wonderful - it's smart, funny, warm, cute, hopeful, human and important. Very well written, touching and real. So please don't miss it; it's a gem! (
