Bumping to W-Authors: John Wyndham. Every one of his 1001 list books are great: Chocky, The Day of the Triffids and The Midwich Cuckoos. Classic sciece fiction with a very subtle sense of humor. -- M1001

... Death of Grass Arthur C. Clarke - The City and the Stars Robert A. Heinlein - The Door Into Summer John Wyndham - The Midwich cuckoos Brian W. Aldiss - Non-Stop James Blish - A Case of Conscience Robert A. Heinlein - Have Space-Suit -- Will Travel Philip K. Dick - Time Out ...

... from characterisations to universally held opinions etc. And these things are encountered everywhere. I recently reread The Midwich cuckoos, which is excellent--and also provides a great snapshot of the "image" of the English housewife of the time. John Brunner's Stand on Zanzibar is also ...

... get around to it. Five that come to mind are Excession by Iain M. Banks, Hunter of Worlds by C. J. Cherryh, The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham, The Naked Sun by Isaac Asimov, and Kemlo and the Martian Ghosts by E. C. Elliott.

I like John Wyndham's novels, especialy Midwich Cuckoos but my M novel is The Mayor of Casterbridge for its plot twists and turns until the Mayor in the title get his comeuppance losing his wealth and social standing.

... from the main story. I appreciate a good context for a story but not when it keeps stepping in the way. Close second is Midwich Cuckoos, because John Wyndham is an awesome, funny writer and this is one of his best books. -- M1001.

... but there are some straight readings. Currently they are working through The House on the Borderland and are starting Midwich Cuckoos today (which should be available for listen again starting tomorrow).

I'm going to be really horrible and jump in to claim that one. It was a great book, but I loved The Midwich Cuckoos even more. Has anyone read that?

... ghurst The Voyage Out, by Virginia Woolf Silk, by Alessandro Baricco (with a barfy Kiera Knightly movie tie-in cover) Midwich Cuckoos, by John Wyndham Jude the Obscure, by Thomas Hardy Bachelor Brothers' Bed & Breakfast, by Bill Richardson History of Danish Dreams, by Peter Hoeg, ...

Midwich Cuckoos would be nice. And, on the poetry front, have they ever done any substantive treatments of T. S. Eliot?

I also agree with The Midwich Cuckoos, but my other recommendation would be Shrine by James Herbert. It's been years & years since I read this as not much more than a kidlet myself, so I may feel differently now but I remember feeling genuinely scared reading it. Hmmm, may have to dig it ...

... style="height:110px; border:1px solid black;"src="http://www.librarything.com/i/covers/med/2580512-m.jpg" /> The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham What can I say… I adore this story!

No John Wyndham? Where's The Day of the Triffids or The Midwich Cuckoos? Agree with LamSon that the lack of a Ray Bradbury novel on the list is an oversight too. Although I haven't read it, my father, who loves his 1950s scifi, recommended a book to me by Fred Hoyle called The Black ...

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham are next for me.

I know there are many better examples, but right now my mind is stuck on The Midwich Cuckoos (AKA Village of the Damned). Doh! Beeg beat me to the punch! Well, there's The Bad Seed, but that's a movie not a book.

The Midwich Cuckoos or as the movie called it - Village of the damned is pretty good too. Nothing says creepy like kidlets in charge.

... glad you liked Web, I'm a big Wyndham fan and this one isn't well known. Most people say oh The Day of the Triffids or The Midwich Cuckoos when you mention the author. As recommendations for horror how about James Herbert. Some of his earlier works might indeed rot your brain, they'r ...

... to actually read anything!), I found another book on the list that I've never heard of that may fill your horror category. The Midwich Cuckoos, by John Wynham sounds very interesting. It has been made into a movie twice, and one of them was called The Village of the Damned, which I have ...

... I think the first one isn't the one she won the Booker prize for; I'm curious to know what was deemed worthy. 32. The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham (224p). I think that's Wyndham done now; I'll write-up my experiences of his writing soon. 33. Memento Mori by Muriel Spark ...
