1358 Marshal of France: The Life and Times of Maurice Comte de Saxe [1696-1750], by Jon Manship White (read 14 Sept 1975) This book is a biography of Maurice, Comte de Saxe--a general for Louis XV whom I had never heard of before that I could remember. He was born Oct 28, 1696, at Goslar in northern Germany, the illegitimate son of Maris Anna von Konigsmarck, a Swedish noblewoman, and Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, and, after 1697, King of Poland. Maurice was at Malplaquet, fought Sept 11, 1709, --on the side of Marlborough and Eugene! After an effort to become Duke of Courland, Maurice became affiliated with the French army and eventually Marshal therein. He was in the War of the Polish Succession, 1733-1735, seeking to prevent his half-brother from succeeding to the crown of Poland. The War of tthe Austrian Succession began in Dec. 1740 (Maria Theresa's father died Oct 20, 1740). Maurice won the Battle of Fontenoy on May 11, 1745. The big battle of 1746 was Rocoux on Oct 10, which was also a victory tho incomplete for France. Laufeldt was the big battle of 1747, fought July 2. The war ended on Oct 18, 1748, when the peace of Aix-la-Chapelle was ratified. Maurice died Nov 30, 1750. The book defends Maurice militarily, but he sure was a pot in his moral life. Kind of makes one sick. Not a scholarly biography, but a good book to read since I like the period but had read little on it. ( )
