In The Legion of Regrettable Supervillains, Jon Morris so of the most bizarre foes to battle across the four-color pages in comics history. Morris writes, "No matter the shape, size, or strategy of the four-color finks gracing these pages, every one of them had the potential to join the ranks of comicdom's icons of evil. It was only poor sales, inopportune timing, and occasional overshadowing from bigger baddies which consigned so many of these scoundrels to the scrapheap of comics history" (pg. 9). Morris organizes the encyclopedic book chronologically, spending most of his time on the Golden Age of comics before moving on to the Silver and Modern Ages. A couple of the villains, ridiculous as they are, have managed to survive and stick around, those most never caught on or appeared in books that flopped. My only critique deals with Morris' chronology. Morris combines the Bronze and Modern Ages of comics and the types of villains he groups together play on different tropes, demonstrating the subtle variations between these two periods. Otherwise, The Legion of Regrettable Supervillains will entertain comics fans and makes a nice companion to Morris' other book, The League of Regrettable Superheroes. ( )
